Who Is Sophie Rambo? All About the 16-Year-Old Who Shattered Athing Mu’s High School National Record

All you need to know about Sophie Rambo, the teenage sensation who broke Athing Mu's high school record.

Sophie Rambo has created a new record. The teenage athlete has broken the six-year-old high school record of former Olympic champion runner Athing Mu, who is well known for her exploits in the 800m event.

Rambo recently took part in the VA Showcase Invitational Meet. She created a new record in the women’s 500m event.

Sophie Rambo Overcomes Athing Mu’s High School Record at VA Showcase Invitational Meet

Rambo aimed to complete a hat-trick of VA Showcase titles, having won two titles in 2024 and 2025. The 16-year-old athlete did it in style, clocking 1:10.07 to win the gold medal in the women’s 500m event at the meet held at the Virginia Beach Sports Center.

However, that wasn’t all. Rambo broke Mu’s previous record of 1:10.22, which she had achieved in 2020, by breaking the previous record of 1:10.30 created around 2008 by Chanelle Price.

With this incredible victory, Rambo has become the first and only athlete to break the barriers of 1:10.20 and 1:10.10 in the women’s 500m discipline. She is also the 26th fastest American of all time in this aspect.

Overall Track Record of Rambo as an Athlete

Rambo has been active in the discipline of track and field since 2024. The 16-year-old athlete is currently a high school student at Grassfield High School, located in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Rambo specializes in 200m, 400m, and even 800m if need be. The teenage athlete made her track debut with the VA Showcase event in 2024, where she won the 500m but finished second overall in the 300m event.

Rambo showed her prowess in both versions of the New Balance meet [Indoor & Outdoor]. The teenage athlete finished second in the 400m indoor event, with a time of 54.39 seconds, while she stood third in the outdoor event with a time of 54.86 seconds.

The teenage athlete further improved her position in the following season. Rambo defended her 500m title at the VA Showcase meet and also finished third in the 300m event. She also won the 300m event at the Millrose Games held in New York.

Rambo also improved her position in the New Balance Indoor meet held in March 2025. She won the 400m event [short track] with an improved time of 53.31 seconds. However, she couldn’t repeat the same performance in the outdoor version held in June 2025. Rambo clocked a time of 53.84 to finish in the seventh position in the New Balance Outdoor meet held in Philadelphia.
