Major Controversy Rocks Romanian Gymnastics as Harassment Complaint Triggers Legal Action Threat

Controversy hits Romanian gymnastics after a harassment claim leads to fierce denials and potential legal fallout for those involved.

Romanian Gymnastics had seen a significant scandal drop after the conclusion of the World Championships in Jakarta, with two of their stars, Denisa Golgota and Sabrina Voinea, caught up in a scandal after Golgota accused Voinea of harassment and physical violence.

Romanian Gymnastics Scandal Between Golgota and Sabrina Explained

Sabrina’s mother and coach, Camelia Voinea, denied wrongdoing in a recent statement. Sabrina narrowly missed out on bronze in the Floor Exercise Final, while Golgota finished No. 7 in the same Floor Exercise Final.

Initially, Golgota revealed after the conclusion of the World Gymnastics Championships that someone on the team had bullied her and threatened to “punch” her. She even filed an official complaint for physical and psychological harassment. According to golazo.ro, Golgota said:

“The only people who supported me are my family; without them, I would never have gotten here. Mrs. Corina Moroșan, Mrs. Carmencita Constantin, and Mrs. Silvia Stroescu are the only ones who have been with me from the start and have done something to help me return to the gym and resume training. I certainly expected more from the Federation; I am totally disappointed.

When I was doing gymnastics five years ago, no one was prioritized. Now, these favoritism acts shocked me too. I can say that many girls came to me and told me what that person said, that she would punch me in the mouth until my face is disfigured and that I would need cosmetic surgery.”

How Did Camelia Voinea Respond to These Comments?

Camelia Voinea was also with the national team in Jakarta. She responded to Golgota’s statement, revealing that it was Sabrina who had been caught up in this issue and threatened to take legal action:

“These are lies, frustrations, because Sabrina is much better than her. It bothers me a lot, and if she doesn’t apologize, I will take legal action. I cannot sit idly by and let everyone say whatever they want without evidence. It is clear she is manipulated by certain people from her circle, but I will not accept such lies.”

The Romanian Gymnastics Federation has not yet issued a statement regarding the scandal between the two. Voinea has been criticized by many for her coaching style and treatment of athletes, including her daughter, with the risks of injury and overtraining highlighted.
