Penny Oleksiak has clarified misconceptions about her two-year suspension from competition for “whereabouts failures.” Oleksiak is Canada’s most decorated female Olympian, having earned seven Olympic medals throughout her career. After withdrawing from the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in July for failing to disclose her whereabouts for testing, she stated that the ban was not about evasion, but an oversight.
Oleksiak last competed at the 2025 Canadian Trials, finishing first in the 100m and 50m freestyle events. Her withdrawal from the World Championships reduced Canada’s swimming roster to 27, but the federation did not list a direct replacement.
Penny Oleksiak Makes Feelings Known On Two-Year Suspension From Swimming
Oleksiak faces a long wait, unable to compete until July 14, 2027. Her journey began with a splash at just 16, when she captured gold in the 100m freestyle at the 2016 Rio Olympics, becoming both Canada’s youngest Olympic champion and an Olympic record holder with Simone Manuel at 52.70 seconds.
Here’s what Oleksiak had to say about the ban in an interview with CBC, explaining the reason behind her failure to be available for the tests.
“It’s just genuine mistakes is really, all I can chalk it up to. It is frustrating knowing that I have that responsibility and that I wasn’t able to pull it to the standards that I normally would,” she said.
She also added that the ban had nothing to do with her taking any drugs: “The picture is kind of painted that way because a whereabouts violation, which is what happened to me, gets automatically put under an anti-doping violation. I guess it’s not as exciting as people would want it to be or expect it to be. You have one year where you can make three mistakes, and that’s kind of long period of three schedule changes.”
Now, Oleksiak trains alone in public pools across Los Angeles, cut off from coaches, teammates, and private facilities by the terms of her suspension.
What Oleksiak Said Regarding Withdrawal From World Championships
The Canadian swimming community was taken aback by Oleksiak’s suspension, as it meant losing one of their top swimmers ahead of the World Championships. Oleksiak has won nine long-course medals at the World Championships, most in relay events.
Oleksiak posted a statement on Instagram about her withdrawal from the tournament, immediately clearing up speculation about why she was banned.
“I want to emphasize that this Whereabouts case does not involve any banned substances; it’s about whether I updated my information correctly. I am and always have been a clean athlete and will be making no further comment at this time,” she wrote back on July 5.
With her ban ending a year before the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, Oleksiak is already eyeing a triumphant comeback. She will have ample time to train, rebuild, and chase Olympic glory once again.
