Penn State Wrestling star Josh Barr has heaped praise on coach Cael Sanderson’s work ethic and how it continues to inspire the team. Sanderson has been the head coach of the Nittany Lions since 2009 and has led the team to four straight NCAA titles.
Josh Barr Explains Why Cael Sanderson Owns the Mental Game
Before his coaching career, Sanderson also enjoyed a decorated wrestling career, winning a gold medal in the 84 kg category at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, among other major honors.
Josh Barr Hails Cael Sanderson’s Impact at Penn State Wrestling. Penn State Wrestling is enjoying yet another dominant season, with the team currently on an 82-match winning streak. The Nittany Lions remain undefeated this season, with an overall record of 11-0 (5-0 in the Big Ten Conference).
Barr spoke with State Media at Penn State University about Sanderson and his impact, raving about the head coach. He said: “Coach Cael is like the greatest troll of all time. He ranks No. 1 for the mental games because he’s so good at giving you hope and taking it all out at the same time. He’ll go get so deep on your leg and then you’ll be getting pinned. He’s laughing at you and he’s like, ‘Alright, I’m just going to pin you real quick’. I’m like, ‘Just shut up, dude. Like I’m not getting pinned real quick’.”
“But he’s the greatest partner ever, I’m so grateful for him and his knowledge… I think it’s crazy and really inspirational that our coaches at their age are putting in four-five days a week of wrestling. Maybe even more than us sometimes. I think that’s really cool.”
Penn State Wrestling will next be in action on Friday, hosting the Nebraska Huskers as part of the Big Ten Conference.
Josh Barr’s 2026 Season With Penn State University
Barr is enjoying an incredible 2026 season under Sanderson’s tutelage. In his sophomore year, the Michigan native is currently unbeaten and is the top-ranked wrestler in the country at 197 pounds, per FloWrestling.
The 22-year-old has been a standout performer for the Nittany Lions this season, recording 12 wins so far. Barr has so far enjoyed wins over Stephen Little, Brody Sampson, Branson John, and Gabe Sollars.
Barr will be determined to win the NCAA crown at 197 pounds this year, having lost in the final last year. He was beaten by Stephen Buchanan II of Iowa, the No. 2 seed, in the 2025 final.
Buchanan won 5-2 on the back of an impressive takedown in the second period and an escape in the third. While Barr settled for second place, Penn State won the team title.
