Olympic Gold Medalist Letsile Tebogo Gets Real About Offers To Switch Citizenship After Massive Success

Regarded as one of Botswana's brightest track and field talents, Letsile Tebogo has now revealed that he had offers from three nations to switch his allegiance.

Letsile Tebogo has quickly risen as a shining star in Botswana’s track and field scene, capturing the spotlight over the last few years. At just 22, he dazzled in the 2025 season, clinching multiple Diamond League victories and making history with a gold medal in the Botswana 4×400 Metres Relay at the World Athletics Championship in Tokyo. His hunger for triumph shows no sign of slowing down.

However, despite grabbing the 4x400m gold medal, which was the first for an African nation in the event, Tebogo has now revealed that he considered offers from three nations to switch his national allegiance.

Which Nations Did Letsile Tebogo Receive Offers From?

Growing up in Kanye, Botswana, Tebogo split his early years between football and sprinting. When injuries sidelined his football dreams, he poured his energy into the track, collecting youth medals and ultimately etching his name in history as Botswana’s first Olympic champion with a stunning victory in the men’s 200m at the Paris Olympics.

During a candid interview on Duma FM, Tebogo shared the names of the nations vying for his allegiance, admitting that their enticing offers gave him pause for thought.

“I’ve got three offers on the table: Qatar, Abu Dhabi, and Tunisia. Those are my three offers that are there at the table. And we’re still trying to see in which direction we can go. Because we told them what we were worth, and they are promising to up their game. Yes, that’s how it is. It’s something on the table. We’ll see what we can do. On a yearly basis, this is how much they could give,” he said.

Tebogo explained that he turned down all the offers for now, mindful of the World Athletics rule that demands a four-year hiatus from major competitions before an athlete can switch countries.

“But on a lighter note, the offers came but were all rejected…Because we had to be considerate, being out of the sport for I think four years, without you representing a country before you can migrate into another country. So for now there’s no more offers on the table.”

Botswana can breathe a sigh of relief for now, as Tebogo has declined the offers, though his words hint at uncertainty about his future allegiance. The country continues to nurture rising stars like Collen Kebinatshipi, a fellow 4x400m team member who also claimed the 400m World Champion title.

At the World Championships, Tebogo shone in the relay but faced setbacks in his individual races. A false start disqualified him from the men’s 100m final, and he narrowly missed the podium with a fourth-place finish in the 200m.

Despite these hurdles, Tebogo’s season sparkled with victories in the 200m at both the Doha and Eugene Diamond League meets, and he came within a heartbeat of winning the Zurich Diamond League final, finishing a close second.
