The Hawkeyes competed against the Cowboys. Despite their best efforts, coach Tom Brands’ boys were unable to match Oklahoma’s dominance, which won by a wide margin of 32-11. This is the biggest victory for the Cowboys since the 1960-61 collegiate wrestling season.

Wrestlers Cody Merrill, Konnor Doucet, and Sergio Vega put the cherry on the icing by literally pinning down their opponents to earn three wins via fall!

Except for wrestlers Ryder Block, Michael Caliendo, and Patrick Kennedy, none of the wrestlers were able to provide any kind of resistance to the Cowboys. The game was sealed when Zach Ryder from the Oklahoma State team defeated Gabe Arnold in the 184-pound category in a sudden-death situation.

Coach Brands assessed the situation in a post-duel press conference, “165 was an important match for the postseason and seeds. They are all important for the postseason and seeds. We’ve got the Big Ten Championships coming up,” he said.

“If you go match-to-match and look at a general tip, get the first takedown and ride. Take it out of them and then build your lead. Get that first takedown and wrestle a tough match, wrestle your match. Finish the seven minutes strong and hard. Pretty good overall formula, right there, to win tough matches in an environment like that,” Brands added.

The Big Ten Championships will take place on March 7 & 8, while the NCAA Championships will be held from March 19 to March 21 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
