‘You Get Humbled Real Quick’ – Noah Lyles On How Marrying Junelle Bromfield Changed His Approach To Track And Field

Noah Lyles keeps capturing attention, both for his electrifying track performances and his life beyond the finish line. Fresh off his 200m gold at the World Championships in Tokyo, Lyles recently married his long-time love, Junelle Bromfield. Their April 4 wedding at The Conservatory at Blackberry Ridge in Trenton, Georgia, was a vibrant celebration of both their American and Jamaican roots.

Bromfield is a track athlete herself, specializing in the 400m and 4x400m relay. She represented Jamaica at the Paris Olympics, where she won bronze as part of the 4x400m relay team.

Noah Lyles Discusses His Relationship With Junelle Bromfield

Lyles and Bromfield’s story began with a simple Instagram message in 2017, when Bromfield playfully asked if he could cook. Though their paths diverged for a while, they reconnected in 2022, and soon after, Lyles asked her to be his girlfriend.

In a recent interview with The Athletic Show, Lyles opened up on how marrying Bromfield has shifted his mindset on the track. Once comfortable playing the ‘villain’ in high-stakes races, he now sees competition through a new lens.

“Man, you get humbled real quick. When you’re in a situation where you think you’re battling everything by yourself, and then you realize that there’s somebody there, it changes the outlook. We were having a hard conversation a few days ago where she said, it’s OK to be the good guy sometimes and let somebody else be the villain.

“I didn’t like hearing that because I’ve had to force myself to be OK with it, to some degree. I didn’t start this to be the villain. I was just the one who was the most OK taking on that blunt force so that other people didn’t have to.”

Over the years, Lyles has faced off against rivals like Erriyon Knighton, Christian Coleman, Fred Kerley, and most recently, Letsile Tebogo. He credits these fierce competitions for boosting both his own profile and the global appeal of track and field.

Lyles On How Track Compares To Team Sports

Last year, Lyles didn’t just claim the 200m world title; he also sprinted to gold with the U.S. 4x100m Relay team, adding to his impressive trophy cabinet. His victory at the Diamond League Finals in Zurich marked his sixth title, making him the most decorated track athlete in Diamond League history.

In the same interview, Lyles also discussed how track compares to team sports like basketball and football. He said that there is a lot of loyalty within team sports, and that in an individual sport, “fans don’t have to cheer for you.” He concluded by saying that international events help fans rally behind one person more often.

Lyles launched his 2026 season at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, racing to a strong second-place finish in the 300m event.
