The wrestling community is reeling after a heartbreaking turn of events involving Nate Jesuroga, the standout youth wrestler whose promising journey was interrupted by a ‘terrible incident’ that led to emergency surgery. At Southeast Polk High School, Jesuroga made his mark with three state placements and two state championships, dominating the 126-pound division.

Before his senior year, Jesuroga made the difficult decision to leave competitive wrestling behind, citing a concussion and burnout, even declining a coveted full scholarship to Iowa.

All About Nate Jesuroga’s Incident

As per a message shared by Jason Jesuroga, Nate’s father, on Facebook, the former wrestling standout was involved in a ‘terrible incident’ and has undergone life-saving surgery from a specialized trauma team. Jason asked for prayers for his son and shared a photo of Nate in a hospital bed.

Jesuroga’s wrestling resume sparkled with achievements: Cadet World Medalist, Fargo Champion, and once the nation’s top-ranked wrestler. But a concussion during offseason practice before his senior year brought relentless migraines and headaches. After passing up the Iowa opportunity, Jesuroga hung up his wrestling shoes and set his sights on the Navy, determined to pursue his dream of becoming a Navy SEAL.

At the Cadet World Championships, Jesuroga clinched a bronze medal at 51 kg for Team USA, cementing his reputation as one of the nation’s most electrifying young talents.

Jesuroga on His Retirement From Wrestling

After establishing himself on the national stage, Jesuroga decided to step away from wrestling in 2023. As per the Des Moines Register, he explained the reasoning behind his decision back then:

“I’m doing good. Really good. I just got tired of it and wanted to do something else. There was a point where I really, really loved it, like it was an obsession. I still think it’s a cool sport. But I’m just not that into it anymore. I don’t know why it was so sudden,” Jesuroga says. “I had never thought about not wrestling, but then one night, I just decided that I didn’t want to do it.”

In the conversation, Jesuroga also added that he has been ‘enjoying’ his time off the mat, saying that wrestling has taught him ‘how to work hard’ and consistently perform at a high level. He also stated that he wants to go into special operations in the U.S. Navy. When Jesuroga joined the U.S. Navy, he was stationed in Norfolk, VA. He is reportedly working at the Air Force RTC as operations manager.
