Penn State Wrestling star Mitchell Mesenbrink has had his say on the team’s dominant run of form in recent seasons. The 23-year-old does not believe that there is a secret sauce behind all their success.
The Nittany Lions have enjoyed a near-perfect start to the season, with a 9-0 record (3-0 in the Big Ten Conference). Penn State also secured its 80th consecutive dual meet victory this past weekend with a dominant 51-0 win over Northwestern on the road.
Mitchell Mesenbrink Explains Penn State Wrestling’s Success
Mesenbrink shared his thoughts on why the Nittany Lions have achieved so much success in recent years. When asked about whether there is a secret sauce behind Penn State Wrestling’s success, he said (via Evan Smith on X):
“I don’t know, I don’t think there is a secret sauce or anything. It’s just keep doing the same things and focusing on the bigger picture of things. In terms of getting ready for the next match or caring for things later in life, not just wrestling, instilling values in your day-to-day that mean something to you and mean something to God, that make a difference.”
“But everybody knows them, they’re not some crazy fable or message that you’ve never heard. It’s just making the, what’s the quote, something like ‘extraordinary is just ordinary over and over’,” he added.
Mesenbrink is regarded as one of the top pound-for-pound wrestlers in the NCAA Division I at the moment. The Penn State junior has been in excellent form in the 165-pound division and won gold in the NCAA Championships last year, his first individual NCAA title. He is also a two-time Big Ten champion.
He is currently ranked No. 1 at 165 pounds and is also FloWrestling’s top pound-for-pound wrestler in the NCAA Division I rankings.
What Next for Penn State Wrestling After Dominant Start to the Season
Mesenbrink and Penn State Wrestling have hardly put a foot wrong so far this season, as evidenced by their excellent results and performances. The Nittany Lions claimed a dominant 32-3 win over rivals Iowa last week. They will now hope to continue this incredible run on Friday when they face the Indiana Hoosiers at home.
The Nittany Lions also have dual meets against Maryland and Nebraska coming up before the end of January. February will be another key month for Penn State Wrestling, with meets coming up against Michigan and Ohio State as we inch closer to the Big Ten Championships and the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
