Mikaela Shiffrin consoled Atle Lie McGrath after his heartbreaking loss at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics. The Norwegian alpine skier crashed out of the men’s slalom race after leading in the first run.
Shiffrin has been facing a similar condition at the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, returning empty-handed from both the team combined and the women’s giant slalom at the quadrennial event.
Mikaela Shiffrin Shares Thoughts on Atle Lie McGrath’s Unfortunate Crash
McGrath posted his thoughts on Instagram after the unfortunate experience in the men’s slalom. The World Championship medalist wrote down an apology to his father, as he mentioned in his post,
“Dear Fafao❤️ I gave it everything. Chasing the biggest dream of them all. I tried to pick up the broken pieces of my heart this past week, just for it to break all over again. Take care of the people you love, you never know how long you have them❤️”
The Norwegian was consoled by several skiers, including former Olympic champion Lindsey Vonn. She commented,
“He is proud of you no matter what ❤️”

“The Olympics ask us to take a real risk on the world stage. One that requires courage and vulnerability to erroneous judgment and narratives built on a limited understanding of what this sport truly demands. And it all matters in the story of becoming the best version of ourselves. We love deeply because we know loss. We feel the pain of defeat because we’ve tasted triumph. Heartbreak and victory live right next door. Disappointment and gratitude often co-exist. @atleliemcgrath”
The 30-year-old multiple World Cup champion is yearning to end her eight-year-long Olympic medal drought. Shiffrin started off on a solid note in the team combined event but faltered in the final run, missing out on the podium finish by a whisker.
The American skiing sensation then set her sights on the giant slalom but ultimately finished 11th, well below her own expectations. The only consolation was that Shiffrin managed to complete the race, unlike her bitter experience at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
However, not everything is over yet, as the American alpine skier is aiming for a podium finish in her favorite event, the slalom. The event will be the final alpine skiing event of this edition, and it will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock at noon.
