Lindsey Vonn Pens an Emotional Message After Losing the Top Spot As the Season Continues

After returning to the top of the sport following years away and major knee surgery, Vonn delivered remarkable performances, including podium finishes throughout the downhill season. Since her first comeback race, the American athlete had expressed her desire to win an Olympic medal before she finally bid goodbye to the sport.

However, the former World Cup Champion had a major crash at the 2026 Winter Olympics, after which she had to be airlifted for immediate medical attention. The downhill crash completely ended her comeback campaign, and Vonn had to undergo multiple surgeries to prevent amputation.

As she began her recovery journey, Vonn shared an emotional message on Instagram reflecting on her remarkable comeback season. The American ski legend revealed that she had held the red leader bib, which is awarded to the World Cup points leader in a discipline since the opening race of the season, but acknowledged that her run at the coveted Crystal Globe, the trophy given to the season’s top skier, was likely coming to an end.

“At the beginning of the season no one would have ever believed I would be even close to this position. And I bet people would have laughed if it was even suggested. But winning the title was my goal… and I came painfully close to achieving it,” she wrote.
