Former Omaha Supernovas coach Laura Bird Kuhn hailed Nebraska’s Volleyball culture as she returned as an assistant coach with the Atlanta Vibe following her short tenure with the Omaha Supernovas.
Kuhn joined the Pro Volleyball Federation’s Supernovas just two matches into the 2024 season as the interim head coach. In a year when Omaha hosted the playoffs, the campaign was marred by season-ending injuries; however, Kuhn stepped up to guide the team to the inaugural PVF Championship.
Laura Bird Kuhn Gets Real about Nebraska’s Volleyball Culture and Fanbase
Kuhn has led the Supernovas to their first title in PVF and has been continuing her momentum as Atlanta Vibe’s assistant head coach in the ongoing season. She and her team travelled to Nebraska for a recent match-up with the Supernovas on January 16, 2026. The Red-and-Ice Blue stunned Omaha 3-2, staging a comeback victory, the first on the road this season.
Outside hitter Leah Edmond led the Vibe with 21 kills, 12 digs, three blocks, and an ace, handing Omaha its first loss of the 2026 season. After the win in front of Nebraska Volleyball’s loyal fanbase, one of the strongest volleyball states in the U.S., Kuhn expressed how fun the environment was, describing it as welcoming to everyone who has played a role in growing the sport in the state.
“These fans are loyal like they love their Nebraska people, and they love anyone that has won here and done things here, and that’s what makes this place special. It honestly is probably the most fun environment that I’ve ever got to experience, other than being on the court, but I’m sure being in the stands and being a part of that is so cool, but it’s very cool to feel that when you come back,” she said.
She also shared that people outside the gym also made her feel special, adding:
“They’re welcoming you back as a whole, so that’s special, and it’s fun to see people outside this gym. I go to restaurants, we went to lunch, and they were hugging me..”
The collegiate volleyball teams in Nebraska are the Cornhuskers and the Creighton Bluejays.

Kuhn was part of the Texas A&M program until November 2022, when she was relieved of her duties with immediate effect, according to a statement from athletic director Ross Bjork. She spent five seasons as head coach, posting a 76–60 overall record.
The 2022 campaign marked a significant downturn, as the Aggies finished 13–16 overall and 5–13 in SEC play. Texas A&M struggled to find leadership and maintain consistency, falling short of the elite standards the program had previously set under Laurie Corbelli.
Jamie Morrison took over as head coach in December 2022 and led the team to the NCAA title for the first time in history in 2025.
