Jakob Ingebrigtsen has undergone surgery for his Achilles tendon injury. The middle-distance runner from Norway had been dealing with the issue since April and was sidelined for a period as a result.

“Those of you who have followed over the past couple of years will know I’ve been struggling with my achilles,” he wrote. “(It’s) a persistent and very specific injury that forced me to miss a lot of training and racing. Around 2 weeks ago, the achilles flared up again and we finally took the decision to travel to America for surgery. This is of course not something to be taken lightly but absolutely the right thing for the longevity of my career.”

Ingebrigtsen first sustained the injury in April 2025, only weeks after notable performances at both the European Indoor Championships and the World Indoor Championships. He initially underwent surgery and attempted a comeback in September 2025 at the Tokyo World Championships. However, the Norwegian runner failed to make a significant impact, leaving without a medal.

In his Instagram post, he added:

“Running is not always sunshine and rainbows but injuries are part of the sport and setbacks are a part of life. Grateful to have an amazing team and support system around me. I’ll be back! (Michael Scott terminator impression voice)🦾”

Ingebrigtsen gained international recognition at the Tokyo Olympics, where he won gold in the men’s 1500m and set a new Olympic record of 3:28.32. He later earned multiple medals at the World Championships and became one of the few athletes to win two Diamond League titles at a single event — the men’s mile and 3000m in 2023.

At the Paris Olympics, Ingebrigtsen entered as a favorite for another gold medal. Although he improved his time, he narrowly missed the podium in the 1500m, finishing fourth. He compensated by winning gold in the men’s 5000m, though he expressed mixed feelings about the result.
