‘These Records Are Held by a Woman’ – Eileen Gu Gets Real on Breaking Barriers as a Pioneer in the 2026 Winter Olympics

Eileen Gu says her Milan-Cortina medals matter most because, in a male-dominated sport, the key freeski records now belong to a woman inspiring others.

Eileen Gu revealed her goal and explained how she has strengthened her position in a male-dominated sporting realm, paving the way for more women in sports to achieve the same. Gu won the halfpipe event on the last day of the Games, after initially earning two silver medals in slopestyle and big air.

The US-born Chinese freestyle skier became the most decorated athlete in her sport after her Olympic success, becoming the first woman to compete in all three events.

Eileen Gu Reveals the Reason Why Her Medals Mean the World to Her

Gu started competing with the US team but soon shifted to her mother’s nation, China, with more than one goal. She not only wished to adorn her resume with medals but also to show the young girls of China what’s achievable. Balancing studies with elite competition, the 22-year-old became the first female skier to win three laurels at a single Gamesa in the 2022 edition.

In the years that followed, she struggled with persistent injuries that hampered her training, but she persevered to win the inaugural halfpipe event of Shaun White’s Snow League and entered the Milan–Cortina Olympics as a top medal hope. Adding three medals to her wall of fame, the 22-year-old expressed that she remains true to her goal of opening a path for women, especially in extreme sports like freeskiing, to dream big.

“I always say my goal is, in being a pioneer, if I am one to begin with, is to leave the path a little bit more open for people who follow. And the path that I’ve chosen right now is that of women in sports, women in extreme sports, women in free skiing. And part of the reason why the medals and the records mean so much to me is that in a male-dominated sport, these records are held by a woman,” she said.

She also emphasized that it’s not about the tricks she showcases on the world stage, but about the mental fortitude that allows her to compete at the same level time and again.

The six-time Olympic medalist revealed that her idea of the best skiing was to make it look effortless. However, over time, she realized that showing vulnerability on the world stage helps others understand that nothing is a cakewalk and gives them the confidence and belief to undertake the journey themselves.

Gu was at the center of massive criticism at the 2026 Games over her representation, and even JD Vance raised questions about her decision to represent China despite being born in the United States. He clearly stated that he did not support anyone who does not identify as American.
