Chloe Kim Addresses Critics After Challenging Winter Olympic Campaign

Kim entered the Winter Olympics after dealing with a difficult period that included recovering from a shoulder injury and spending very little time on the snow. The American snowboard star had to focus on rehabilitation while preparing for the Games, making her build-up to the competition far from ideal.

Despite those challenges, Kim still competed at the Olympics and won a bronze medal, adding another achievement to her decorated career. However, the result quickly sparked mixed reactions online, with some critics questioning her performance.

Reflecting on the criticism surrounding her Olympic performance, Kim shared her frustration over how quickly people judge athletes without understanding what they go through behind the scenes. The snowboarder faced criticism from some fans for missing out on the gold medal, despite finishing on the podium.

She explained that reaching the Olympics itself is incredibly challenging and that every medal represents months of sacrifice and determination.

Speaking about the injury she dealt with and the limited training she had before the Games, Kim opened up about her experience during an appearance on the “Not Skinny But Not Fat” podcast and told Amanda Hirsch,

“Being at the Olympics alone is so competitive, like getting there is so difficult and competitive. When you walk away with any medal, that’s such a big accomplishment, and for that to get diminished is so stupid, like who cares? You don’t know my story. You don’t know where I was at when I was going into this. You don’t know what I had to go through, as I went through some s**t, you know, like I got injured, I literally had no time on the snow.”

The Olympic silver medalist pointed out how unrealistic the expectations can be when athletes compete after difficult circumstances. Explaining the limited preparation she had before the Olympics, the snowboard star added,

“You know how crazy it would be for me to not practice at all when everyone else is spending the entire winter on snow, and I’m going in with my like four days to practice, thinking that I’m going to win the damn thing like, that’s so delusional. Everyone wants to be so negative. Meanwhile, you’re sitting on your a** hating.”

Looking ahead, Kim has not confirmed her next competition yet, as she revealed she will likely need shoulder surgery after competing through the injury at the Winter Olympics.
