Bo Bassett heaped praise on Virginia Tech wrestler Jimmy Mullen as he recorded a one-sided win at 285 pounds at the Southern Scuffle Tournament. Mullen has been making waves as a heavyweight wrestler at the collegiate level, currently redshirting as a sophomore.

Bassett, one of the top wrestlers in the US, committed to Virginia Tech after previously announcing his move to Iowa Wrestling as the No. 1 recruit in the 2026 college wrestling class.

The St. Joe’s Regional alum, Mullen, opened the first period with a lead of 7-1 after recording a couple of takedowns. Little Rock’s Michael Gasper stormed a comeback in the third period with a takedown but ultimately fell to the former 9-5. Alongside him, Eddie Ventresca triumphed at 125 pounds, helping the college program to fourth place in the standings with 105.5.

On Mullen’s dominance in the heavyweight division, Bassett called him a ‘CHAMP’ under Hokie’s official Instagram post. He will take the mat in the 2026-27 season, alongside fellow top recruit Melvin Miller.

In October 2025, the Bishop McCort High School standout announced on social media that he had “officially” become a Hokie. He had also considered Penn, Penn State, Oklahoma State, and Nebraska among his potential college programs, coming off an undefeated high school record.

Bassett Etches His Name in the History Books With His Record Fourth Ironman Title

The Ironman Championships in December 2025 welcomed five PIAA-affiliated schools in one of the most difficult high school wrestling tournaments of all time. The first four-time Super 32 champion, and Virginia Tech-bound Bassett, was a force to be reckoned with in the event.

Aiming to write another chapter in the history book, he surged to the finals after defeating every wrestler on the way and faced two-time Ironman and PIAA champion Joe Bachmann.

He defeated Bachmann in the 150-pound category, closing out with a 14-6 major decision for his fourth title. As a result, he joined the elite list of wrestlers, which includes Zahid Valencia and David Taylor, NCAA standouts who each have four Ironman titles.

Bassett unfurled his dominance at the 2025 Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament, defeating No. 2-ranked Charlie Desena in the finals with six tech falls, scoring 6-0. He became the Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler, sharing the honor with fellow Virginia Tech-bound Melvin Miller.
