Bo Bassett expressed his excitement as Virginia Tech wrestling adds Mario Carini to its class of 2027. This comes weeks after Carini visited the Hokies wrestling program during an official visit, along with a few other collegiate programs, including Cornell and Michigan.
Carini is one of the interesting prospects of his class and is ranked as the No. 21 overall recruit, thereby boosting Virginia Tech wrestling’s strength for the upcoming few years.

Carini’s career highlights include a first-place finish at the USA Freestyle State Championships in 2024 and a third-place finish at the USA Greco-Roman State Championships in 2023. The addition of a young wrestler with such an impressive bio to Virginia Tech left Bassett excited.
Bassett reacted with a one-word message on Carini’s Instagram post, where the latter announced his commitment to Virginia Tech. Bassett commented, “Brother❤️.”

Bassett further shared this post on his Instagram stories and welcomed Carini to the program. He wrote, “Couldn’t be more pumped!!! Welcome to the family.”

Bassett joined the Virginia Tech Hokies program nearly a month ago, along with Melvin Miller. He was briefly committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes earlier in the year, but later decommitted from the program.
Bassett Opened Up About His Pennsylvania Wrestling Roots
Bassett recently shed light on how his roots in a wrestling-dominated state like Pennsylvania help him express his skills in a new program like the Virginia Tech Hokies. A native of Pennsylvania, Bassett attended Bishop McCort High School and won several PIAA State Wrestling Championships.
Speaking about his roots, Bassett said, “I’m really excited to come down to Virginia Tech from Pennsylvania, start that pipeline. We have a really awesome high school team, and I know there are a lot of younger guys who are fired up; they’re fired up to have this pipeline, and being from Pennsylvania, wrestling is a big deal from the day you start when you are six years old.”
“I love the sport from the time I started. So, coming from a really awesome culture, I feel like I can use that to add to what we already have here,” Bassett further added on how the Pennsylvania culture would complement his time at Virginia Tech.
Bassett is going through an impressive form himself lately. The Bishop McCort High School wrestler clinched a title at the Super-32 Championships and followed it up with a victory at the Clarion Open Championships.
