All About Laila Edwards and Why She Is Making History With Olympic Debut
So what’s special about Laila Edwards’ participation in the Winter Olympics? The 22-year-old ice hockey player is the first female black player to represent Team USA in this sport at the Winter Olympics. The forward player aims to make her country proud as she spoke with reporters ahead of the opening ceremony. In her words,
“I feel like I’ve been learning to embrace it. It’s a big deal and it can make a positive impact on other people so why not embrace it.”
The ice hockey player further added about representing the USA at the Olympics, as she said,
“To have the opportunity to be an Olympian is crazy just even say out loud. There are a lot of people who helped me get here that I owe thanks to, and I want to give my best every day to make them proud.”

Interestingly, Edwards wasn’t interested in ice hockey, but eventually, destiny had something else in store for her. She was initially trained in figure skating, but her father soon realized it wasn’t the sport she was made for. In his interview ahead of the Olympics, Edwards’ father, Robert Edwards, mentioned,
“I first realized how special Laila was when she was like 7 and she was making adult moves, like zooming through people. She kept playing with boys and just got better and better.”
Edwards’ journey wasn’t a bed of roses initially. Though there was no rule that prohibited the participation of athletes on the basis of race, ice hockey was predominantly a ‘white only’ sport in letter and spirit. Before Edwards, only Jordan Greenway had made it to the US squad as the first African American player.
However, Edwards overcame these barriers through strong determination and her talent. The 22-year-old player was a part of the US squad that won the Junior World Championships in 2022. She was also part of the American squad that won the silver medal at the World Championships in 2024, before upgrading to gold in the 2025 edition.
Team USA has consistently won Olympic medals in women’s ice hockey at the Winter Olympics since 1998. They had previously clinched the silver medal at the 2022 Winter Olympics and are aiming to win the gold this time.
