Olaivavega Ioane’s NFL Draft Potential

Olaivavega Ioane started five games and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a redshirt freshman, and then proceeded to start all 16 games at left guard during the Nittany Lions’ 16-game CFB Playoff campaign in 2024. Now Ioane is back, and he’s one of a select few bright spots remaining on the team’s offensive side.

At 6’4″, 328 pounds, Ioane has overwhelming size, width, and mass, but he’s a stellar athlete for his build as well. He moves with uncharacteristic lightness both on the lateral plane and when climbing upfield, and his hands carry true crushing power at the point of attack. Ioane can drive defenders off the ball on down and base blocks, and can climb to the second level, but his primary proficiency is his pass protection. He specializes in staying square to rushers and keeping a strong, steady base, while still unlocking throttling hand force and strike power on successive extensions.

Ioane isn’t the best athlete in the guard class, nor is he the most flexible, but he still passes the desired threshold in these areas for his size. He has the profile to command early-to-mid Day 2 capital in the 2026 NFL Draft, and he projects as a long-term NFL starter with an early and tangible two-phase impact.

CFB Week 9 Update

Penn State was on a bye in Week 9, but they’ll return to action against the vaunted Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 10. Ioane’s most pressing test in this game will be nose tackle hybrid Kayden McDonald, whose initial explosion and power element will force sound play out of his stance.

However, there’s also Kenyatta Jackson Jr. to be aware of, who has been used as an interior 3-tech and 4i rusher at times with his long and lean power profile. If Ioane keeps his consistency against top-end competition, he could solidify his standing in the OG1 race.

CFB Week 10 Update

Ioane was one of a select few bright spots for the Nittany Lions against the Buckeyes in Week 10. The 6’4″, 328-pound blocker experienced occasional lapses in block sustain with his non-elite knee bend and latch placement, but overall, he was strong in both phases of the game. Against an imposing power rusher in Kayden McDonald, Ioane anchored well and did a nice job resetting his feet and gathering with active hands while keeping a sturdy base.

Meanwhile, in the run game, his urgent lower-body power drive and finishing ability took over on more than one occasion inside the hashes. A strong, sturdy, and heavy-handed guard with bounding athleticism out of his stance, Ioane’s success in resisting the Buckeyes’ onslaught compounds his momentum as a top 50 prospect.

CFB Week 11 Update

Indiana’s ferocious interior defensive line didn’t have as much success against Penn State as it has for most of the year, and Ioane was a big reason why. Ioane is extremely dense and hard-to-move at contact, both with his heavy hands and his heavyset frame.

His anchor and center of gravity consistently prove formidable in pass protection, and in the run game, he used his bounding initial explosion and power drive to clear open lanes and help runners get downhill. Ioane distinguished himself like a future early-round pick should, and he remains one of the top guards in the class.

CFB Week 12 Update

In what ended up being a comfortable win over the Michigan State Spartans, Ioane distinguished himself as the best player on Penn State’s offensive line. Both in space and at the contact point, he dominated the Spartans’ interior line, helping the Nittany Lions eclipse 200 yards rushing on the ground.

Ioane’s bounding explosiveness and range out of his stance at times defies logic in accordance with his size, and he has the crippling hand power and drive you’d expect at contact — on stationary base blocks, down blocks, and when operating on the move. Bisontis remains my OG1, but the gap between him and Ioane is slim.

Where Is Ioane Being Selected Most Often in the PFSN Mock Draft Simulator?

Ioane currently holds the No. 42 overall rank among prospects, positioning him as a Day 2 prospect. His most recent Average Draft Position (ADP) of 28.4 as of November 19 reflects that he is typically being selected in the first round.

Interestingly, his ADP is higher than his rank, suggesting that users are targeting him more aggressively than his positional ranking might indicate.

Notably, 27.5% of the Los Angeles Chargers’ first-round selections over that same period were used on Ioane, underscoring users’ strong preference for him as a potential immediate-impact offensive guard.
