‘Nothing’s 100% Certain’ — 49ers Star George Kittle Reveals Return Timeline Amid Injury Concerns

George Kittle revealed his return timeline after suffering a torn Achilles during the playoffs, and 49ers fans have every reason to be excited.

George Kittle ended the 2025 season on a sour note. The San Francisco 49ers tight end suffered a torn Achilles tendon during a 23-19 upset victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, forcing him to watch from afar as the Seattle Seahawks dismantled his team in the Divisional Round. However, San Francisco fans might not have to wait long for his return.

What to Expect From George Kittle’s Recovery and Potential Week 1 Return

Although an Achilles tendon rupture is a serious injury, Kittle could return sooner rather than later. On Tuesday, 49ers beat reporter David Lombardi spoke to the tight end about the expectations for his return. Kittle revealed that he has a chance to play and could be on the field with his teammates when the 2026 season starts.

“Definitely on track. I have a chance. Nothing’s 100% certain, but I haven’t taken a step back, nothing bad has happened. Knock on so much wood, but we’re slowly getting better. That’s all I can ask for, we’re pushing as hard as I can just without being an idiot”, Kittle said.

News of an early return could not be better for San Francisco. For the second consecutive year, a massive list of significant injuries derailed the team’s Super Bowl chances. Kittle, Nick Bosa, Mykel Williams, and Fred Warner were among the stars whose seasons ended prematurely. Even quarterback Brock Purdy missed a few games before returning later in the year.

Kittle played in 11 games in 2025, finishing the year with 628 yards and seven touchdowns. The PFSN TE Impact Metric ranked him as the No. 5 tight end for the season with an above-average 86.9 grade. Due to injuries, this marked the first time since 2022 that he did not surpass the 1,000-yard receiving mark.

Kittle is 32 and remains a key piece of head coach Kyle Shanahan’s offense. He has earned five All-Pro nominations and seven Pro Bowl selections. San Francisco maximized the value of its draft capital, selecting Kittle in the fifth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

His presence on the field likely would not have changed the outcome of the 49ers’ loss to the Seahawks. The eventual champions secured a 41-6 victory en route to their second Super Bowl title. Still, San Francisco fans cannot endure a third consecutive year ravaged by injuries.

The upcoming campaign will mark Shanahan’s 10th season as the head coach in San Francisco. Despite building multiple great rosters and making two Super Bowl appearances, he has yet to win a championship ring. The return of players like Kittle will be vital to boosting his chances.
