The Dianna Russini and Mike Vrabel scandal has been the talk of the NFL offseason. Over the last few weeks, the saga has quieted down to some extent.
However, in the aftermath of the controversy, Russini resigned from her position as a senior NFL insider at The Athletic, while Vrabel stepped away from the New England Patriots on Day 3 of the 2026 NFL Draft to attend counseling alongside his family.
Now, one NFL writer believes that the controversy has permanently marred Russini’s name.
Dianna Russini Cannot Shake Mike Vrabel Scandal
The entire situation began after photos leaked showing the pair at a resort in Arizona. At the time, both parties tried to play it off as no big deal, with Vrabel stating that the photos showed a “completely innocent interaction and any suggestion otherwise is laughable.”
However, Russini reportedly failed to provide evidence to The Athletic that she was on a girls’ trip, and Vrabel admitted to having some difficult conversations with his family. Then, additional photos and videos began to surface, showing Vrabel and Russini allegedly kissing in a bar in New York back in 2020 and renting a boat together in 2021.
Russini has yet to come forward and tell her side of the story. During a recent appearance on “Mike Drop With Mike Asti,” NFL writer Crissy Froyd wondered if the public will believe Russini if she does speak out and share her version of events (or try to implicate others).
“I think there are a lot of reasons she’s not saying anything right now. But part of me questions… I think she’d have to supply a lot of evidence,” Froyd said of Russini. “I think after the indignant statement that she made, which has now been proven false entirely, and even what Vrabel said, I think a decent number of people will believe her but I think some people will go, ‘You have no credibility, and you’re a liar. You’re gonna kick and scream and say this about this person, but we’re not gonna believe you.’ I think she will have to show some legitimate evidence or have people corroborate her.”

Froyd is referencing the statement that Russini made when the photos first leaked, plus her resignation letter to The Athletic when she wrote that she was stepping away “not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.” In the letter, she was adamant that she had “covered the NFL with professionalism” throughout her career, and blamed the media for engaging “in self-feeding speculation that is simply unmoored from the facts.”
Froyd, who was fired from USA TODAY Sports after commenting on Russini’s resignation, has been outspoken about the scandal. She has maintained that Russini isn’t the only reporter engaging in this behavior, stating that the NFL has a “culture of corruption.”
It remains to be seen if Russini will give a tell-all interview, but Froyd is right that some people may take what she says with a grain of salt given how this situation has played out.
