When reacting to the fallout surrounding Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice, Nick Wright didn’t mince words. Speaking on First Things First, the analyst delivered a blunt assessment following Rice’s sentencing for his role in a multi-car crash in Dallas last March.
How Did Nick Wright React to Rashee Rice’s Legal Consequences?
“I think Rashee Rice is incredibly lucky three times over,” Wright said. “He’s gonna do 30 days in jail at some point, he’s gonna have five years probation, like, you gotta stay out of trouble… That’s a real thing. And he still got incredibly lucky. The penalty from the courts could have been far more severe. The injuries he sustained, which were none, in the accident could have killed him, could have been career-ending.”

Wright’s assessment reflects what many around the league are thinking. Rice may have avoided the harshest legal penalties, but that doesn’t mean he’s in the clear. With Chiefs training camp starting July 21, the weight of his off-field decisions will likely follow him onto the field.
The 25-year-old receiver was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to two third-degree felonies stemming from a high-speed crash on a Dallas highway. Authorities said Rice was driving 119 mph in a Lamborghini when he lost control, causing a wreck involving six vehicles. He fled the scene on foot and later turned himself in.
Although no one was killed, multiple people were injured. Rice must now pay over $115,000 in medical restitution and faces ongoing civil lawsuits that could result in millions in damages. The jail time does not have to be served immediately, but it must be completed at some point during his probation period.
What Does This Mean for the Chiefs As Training Camp Begins?
From the league’s standpoint, the NFL had delayed disciplinary action until the legal case was closed. Now that it is, multiple reports suggest a suspension is imminent. Chiefs insider Matt Derrick reported the team expects Rice to miss somewhere between two and four games, though he noted that the projection could be optimistic.
Wright also addressed the potential football impact, saying, “Is it gonna have an impact on the Chiefs? Yeah.”
Kansas City will likely have to rely more heavily on Xavier Worthy and veterans Travis Kelce and Hollywood Brown to fill the gap during any potential Rice suspension.
Rice has publicly apologized for his actions, acknowledging the damage caused and committing to making the victims whole. However, as Wright pointed out, accountability doesn’t end with a courtroom decision. It follows a player into the locker room, onto the field, and into the eyes of fans and teammates alike.
As the Chiefs head into camp, all eyes remain on the league office and Rice’s next steps.
