NFL World Reacts to Texans GM’s Uncertainty Over Joe Mixon’s Surgery: ‘One of the Strangest Injury-Related Storylines Ever’

Nick Caserio’s “day-to-day” comments and Joe Mixon’s secretive surgery have many wondering if the veteran RB has already played his last snap in Houston.

The Houston Texans are coming off a 12-5 season that ended in a Divisional Round loss to the New England Patriots. Now, just weeks before free agency, the focus has shifted from playoff frustrations to a far murkier issue: Joe Mixon’s future.

Instead of clarity, general manager Nick Caserio delivered uncertainty, and the NFL world noticed.

NFL World Stunned by Caserio’s ‘Day-to-Day’ Comments

KPRC 2’s Aaron Wilson first shared Caserio’s comments on X, relaying the GM’s explanation of Mixon’s situation.

“We’ve talked to Joe. Honestly, it’s day to day,” Caserio said. “I think he had a surgery this offseason. I’m not trying to be evasive, but it’s a moving target. We’ll see what the prognosis is for the season and try to figure out what ultimately makes sense.”

The phrasing immediately drew attention. Caserio saying he “thinks” Mixon had surgery and describing it only “in some capacity” struck many as unusual, given that Mixon missed the entire season on the non-football injury list.
For a veteran Pro Bowl running back under a $27 million contract, the lack of specifics raised eyebrows.

“One of the strangest injury-related storylines I’ve ever seen,” football podcast host JJ Zachariason wrote.

That sentiment reflected broader confusion across league observers, many of whom have followed the Mixon saga since last offseason.

Underdog director Hayden Winks added, “Joe Mixon is such a mystery his own GM can’t even say with certainty if he had surgery.”

Others responded with a more emotional tone, focusing on what Mixon meant to the franchise before his injury.

“Whatever happens with Joe Mixon in Houston, he was one of my favorite players to watch in a Texans uniform,” SB Nation journalist Nick Schwager posted.

Some reactions were more pointed. “It’s amazing Nick Caserio said today, he thinks Joe Mixon had surgery in some capacity… If the Texans were planning to have him back, Caserio would know,” veteran football journalist John McClain posted.

“Nick Caserio lied all season about Joe Mixon, and he’s still doing it…” Scott Connor, content manager of the “DestinationDevy” podcast, wrote.

Mixon, a former Pro Bowler and team captain, rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns two seasons ago. Without him, Houston’s ground game struggled. The Texans managed just 48 rushing yards in their playoff loss. Woody Marks led the team and flashed promise, including a 112-yard playoff performance against Pittsburgh, but consistency was lacking.

Coach DeMeco Ryans acknowledged the impact of Mixon’s absence. “Joe is one of the top running backs in this league. That affected us,” he said. When asked if Mixon would return next season, Ryans admitted, “No clarity.”

League sources expect the Texans to move on from Mixon, potentially releasing him from his three-year, $27 million deal and saving $8.5 million. Houston is reportedly exploring the high-end running back market, including names like Kenneth Walker III and Travis Etienne Jr.

Caserio emphasized the team’s need to add bodies. “We only got three guys that are on the team currently… We’re probably gonna have more than three players on the team.”

For now, Mixon’s future and even the full details of his surgery remain unclear. With free agency looming, Houston may soon provide answers. Until then, the uncertainty continues to fuel speculation across the league.
