Maple Leafs Star William Nylander Puts Cards on the Table With NHL Trade Deadline Looming

William Nylander reacts to trade deadline rumors as Maple Leafs slide in standings and face tough sell-or-buy decision.

The pressure is mounting in Toronto. After a lopsided 5-2 loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday, the Toronto Maple Leafs find themselves at the bottom of the Atlantic Division. With their playoff hopes fading and the NHL trade deadline approaching, questions are swirling about whether the Leafs will shift into seller mode.

And now, one of their biggest stars, William Nylander, has addressed the uncertainty.

William Nylander on Leafs’ Plans Ahead of Deadline

Nylander didn’t dodge the topic when asked whether he’s concerned management could sell at the deadline. “Yeah, I don’t know what to say. It’s their decision, & whatever they do, I’m still going to be trying my best every night,” Nylander said.

It was a calm but telling response from a player who understands the business side of the sport. Toronto is now eight points out of the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. And coming off back-to-back losses following the Olympic break, the margin for error is shrinking fast.

The Leafs’ direction at the deadline will likely depend on how they perform in the coming weeks. But if the slide continues, selling off select pieces could become the most realistic option.

Captain Auston Matthews echoed a similar mindset, focusing on what the team can control.

“There’s always going to be a lot of noise. For us, it’s focusing on the guys in the room right now, focusing on what’s in front of us, directly in front of us, which is the next game,” Matthews said. “So, that’s all that we can control as far as that stuff goes.”

What Could a Sell-Off Look Like?

If Toronto does pivot toward selling, it likely wouldn’t signal a full rebuild. The organization is not expected to move franchise cornerstones. Instead, attention would turn to players on expiring deals or those without long-term roles in the team’s future plans.

Names that could surface in trade discussions include Bobby McMann, Scott Laughton, Nick Robertson, Matias Maccelli, Max Domi, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, Simon Benoit, Troy Stecher, Anthony Stolarz, and Brandon Carlo.

The goal wouldn’t be to tear it down. But rather to retool and position the club for a stronger push in 2026-27.

With the trade deadline looming and the standings tightening, every game now carries added weight.

“It is (troubling). It is the same thing as last night’s game in Tampa. You need it for 60 minutes, especially now. We can’t take any shifts off. It is my job to make sure they have it.” Leafs HC Craig Berube said.

The Leafs will try to steady the ship Saturday when they take on the Ottawa Senators, but whether they’re buyers, sellers, or somewhere in between may soon become much clearer.
