Not every blockbuster trade is defined by the player who leaves. Sometimes, the biggest story is the one arriving in return, and that’s exactly the position Edmonton finds itself in after moving Darnell Nurse.
While the financial flexibility grabbed most of the early attention, another intriguing angle emerged as Shakir Mukhamadullin entered the picture. The young defenseman now has a chance to turn a headline-making trade into the biggest opportunity of his NHL career.
What Shakir Mukhamadullin Brings to the Oilers’ Blueline
Mukhamadullin became one of the centerpiece additions when the Oilers sent Nurse to the San Jose Sharks in a pretty significant deal completed on Day 1 of free agency.
Edmonton also acquired defensive prospect Zack Sharp, while San Jose absorbed Nurse’s entire $9.25 million cap hit without any salary retention, giving the Oilers valuable financial flexibility.
Mukhamadullin arrives with the profile of a modern NHL defenseman. At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, the 24-year-old combines size with smooth skating, a long reach, and the ability to move the puck effectively. He shoots left, owns a heavy shot from the blue line, and continues to develop the defensive consistency needed to become an everyday NHL contributor.
His NHL journey began when the New Jersey Devils selected him 20th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft. Less than three years later, he became part of the package sent to San Jose in the Timo Meier trade, where the Sharks viewed him as an important piece of their rebuilding blueline.
After making his NHL debut in January 2024, Mukhamadullin split time between the NHL and AHL before earning a more regular role.
During the 2025-26 season, he played a career-high 50 games despite battling minor injuries, finishing with five goals, seven assists, and 12 points while averaging just over 17 minutes per game. Across 83 NHL appearances, he has totaled seven goals and 22 points.
The Oilers aren’t asking Mukhamadullin to replace every minute Nurse played immediately. Instead, the organization expects him to compete for a permanent role on the third defensive pairing, where his combination of youth and upside could become an important part of Edmonton’s blueline depth.

By clearing Nurse’s contract entirely, general manager Stan Bowman created nearly $8 million in projected cap space, allowing the team to add veteran goaltender Frederik Andersen and re-sign Kasperi Kapanen while maintaining enough flexibility to negotiate Mukhamadullin’s next contract.
The second player acquired in the deal, Zack Sharp, remains a longer-term project. The 21-year-old left-shot defenseman is coming off a productive sophomore season at Western Michigan University and is expected to continue developing before making a serious push for an NHL roster spot.
