The San Jose Sharks head into the 2025 NHL Draft with nine picks in hand, including two in the first round. The team will select second overall, a critical spot that could shape their rebuild for years. They’ll also pick 30th overall, a selection acquired from the Dallas Stars after the latter’s playoff elimination. The draft is scheduled to begin on Friday night, and anticipation is building around who the Sharks will select.
Complete Breakdown of the San Jose Sharks’ Draft Picks
The Sharks are expected to target elite young talent with their early picks. Reports suggest that if defenseman Matthew Schaefer is taken first overall by the New York Islanders, the Sharks will likely draft the Saginaw Spirit forward Michael Misa, a dynamic scorer and two-way threat.
Other names reportedly linked include Anton Frondell, Caleb Desnoyers, and Porter Martone. While Misa is the favorite, internal debate may still be ongoing.
With the 30th pick from the trade that sent Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci to the Stars, the Sharks have multiple projected targets.
The Stars acquired Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci from the Sharks on Saturday in exchange for a 2025 first-round draft choice and 2025 fourth-round selection.

Henry Brzustewicz formed a mighty pair with Sam Dickinson on the London Knights. If Brzustewicz joins Dickinson in the Sharks, the team could be ” set on their back end for years to come”. Others include William Moore from the U.S. National Team Development Program and Blake Fiddler of the Edmonton Oil Kings.
In addition to their first-rounders, the Sharks hold two second-round picks: 33rd and 53rd overall. The 33rd pick gives them the top option in the second round. Names linked to this spot include winger Shane Vansaghi and possibly Brzustewicz, if still available.
The 53rd pick was acquired from the Ottawa Senators in the Fabian Zetterlund trade, and projections from Tankathon have Jacob Rombach slotted there.

The San Jose Sharks have acquired defenseman Cody Ceci and a 2025 3rd-round pick in exchange for defenseman Ty Emberson.

In the fourth round, the Sharks hold two picks: 115th (via Columbus Blue Jackets from the Luke Kunin trade) and 124th (a conditional pick from the Stars through Winnipeg Jets, tied to the Granlund-Ceci trade). Their original fourth-round pick was traded to the Senators.

The fifth-round pick (150th overall) came in a deal that sent goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood to the Colorado Avalanche. The Sharks hold a seventh-round pick at 210th overall from the New Jersey Devils via the Kaapo Kahkonen trade. The Sharks’ seventh-rounder went to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a deal involving Anthony Duclair.
Sharks’ Draft Direction and Off-Ice Headlines
Beyond the draft, the Sharks are facing several major storylines. Forward Klim Kostin, acquired at the 2024 deadline, is reportedly not expected to return after a disappointing season. The Russian winger may be headed to the KHL’s Avangard Omsk.
Meanwhile, contract talks with forward William Eklund are on hold as he recovers from wrist surgery. GM Mike Grier stated that the team focuses on Eklund’s health.
As for potential free agent pursuits, the Sharks are reportedly interested in big names, including Mitch Marner. However, Grier has emphasized caution with long-term deals, favoring short-term, high-AAV contracts instead. The team has also been linked to Canucks forward Brock Boeser following Vancouver’s acquisition of Evander Kane.
With a top-heavy draft board and several open questions surrounding the roster, the Sharks are heading into the 2025 NHL Draft to solidify a new era. All eyes will be on their selections this Friday night.
