Who better to weigh in on the Edmonton Oilers’ Stanley Cup chances than the sport’s greatest of all time?
NHL legend Wayne Gretzky appeared on this week’s “New Heights,” the hit podcast hosted by Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and his brother, Philadelphia Eagles legend Jason Kelce. During the lighthearted yet insightful conversation, Gretzky had a few things to say about the Oilers and where they currently stand in the fight for this year’s Stanley Cup.
Wayne Gretzky Backs Edmonton Oilers but Warns of Tough Road Ahead
Gretzky made it clear where he stands on the Oilers’ Stanley Cup journey, stating that he’s always been one of their biggest believers.
Gretzky proudly pointed out that he was the only member of the TNT panel who predicted the Oilers would make it to the Stanley Cup Final this year. However, he also acknowledged how tough the path ahead will be, especially with the Dallas Stars standing in their way.
”Edmonton learned a great lesson last year, losing in the Finals. They will be a little bit different, a little bit more different, and some of the things won’t be surprises off the ice. But they still got to get through to Dallas.
“Dallas is so well-coached. Rantanen… that kid is just a tremendous hockey player. Their goaltender, Jake Oettinger, is really good. They’re big, they’re well-coached. I still think this will go to Game 7.” Gretzky said.

In his analysis, Gretzky noted that last year’s playoff loss was a valuable learning experience for Edmonton. He believes the Oilers are now better prepared, both mentally and strategically, for the high-stakes pressure of the postseason.
He also emphasized that experience counts in the playoffs, especially when it comes to handling off-ice distractions, physical fatigue, and high-pressure moments.
Still, he made it clear that Dallas is not a team to underestimate. Gretzky praised their coach and their depth and especially highlighted goaltender Jake Oettinger and forward Mikko Rantanen as major threats. He stressed that the Stars are big, disciplined, and play a tough brand of playoff hockey that won’t be easy to overcome.
Gretzky also noted the difficulty of dethroning a defending conference champion like the Florida Panthers, pointing out how teams with playoff experience know how to manage emotions and avoid distractions. That’s something he believes the Oilers are still learning.
Ultimately, Gretzky didn’t waver in his belief that Edmonton has what it takes, but predicted a nail-biting series that’s destined to go the distance.
