Vegas Golden Knights HC Moves Quickly to Dispel Rumors of Rift With Mitch Marner

Speculation didn’t take long to surface when the Vegas Golden Knights hired John Tortorella, especially regarding how his demanding coaching style might mesh with forward Mitch Marner.

But the new bench boss quickly moved to shut down any talk of tension, and early signs suggest the partnership is off to a strong start.

Vegas Coach Clears the Air on Mitch Marner

Marner arrived in Vegas last summer after being moved from the Toronto Maple Leafs in a sign-and-trade deal on July 1, 2025. His first season with the Golden Knights hasn’t matched the numbers from his previous campaign, but it has still been solid.

Marner has produced 79 points in 79 games, maintaining a point-per-game pace, though down from the 102 points he recorded the year before.

The conversation around Marner intensified after Vegas parted ways with head coach Bruce Cassidy following a sluggish stretch after the Olympic break. The organization turned to Tortorella. His reputation for discipline and accountability immediately sparked questions about how players, particularly Marner, given past scrutiny from his time with Toronto, would respond.

According to reporter Stormy Buonantony, Tortorella addressed the talk immediately. “Marner told me he saw and heard all of that. Torts actually pulled him aside and talked about it right away. He said, don’t listen to any of the crap people are saying. He said, ‘I’m here to help you,’” Buonantony said.

Marner, in turn, embraced the approach. Buonantony then added, “Marner told me, ‘Yes, Torts wants hard work. He wants you to be dialed in. He wants you to be smart with your decisions.’”

The early returns on the coaching change have been encouraging. Since Tortorella took over, Vegas has won five of six games, with the lone defeat coming in a 4-3 shootout against the Seattle Kraken on Thursday.

Momentum continued with a 3-2 overtime victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday. The win pushed Vegas into first place in the Pacific Division and secured a playoff berth, further quieting any concerns about the team’s direction under the new coach.

With the rumors of a rift put to rest and the team trending upward, the Golden Knights appear comfortable with their new leadership. They’ll look to keep building momentum when they face the Winnipeg Jets on Monday, as Marner and Tortorella continue to show that early speculation may have been overblown.
