‘We Can’t Push Him to Do Anything’ — Canucks Boss Henrik Sedin Draws Line in the Sand Over $92M Star Elias Pettersson

Another year brought another episode of grief to the Vancouver Canucks’ charge to compete for the Stanley Cup.

Locker-room tension, injuries, and major offensive regression pushed the team to the bottom of the NHL standings and forced ownership into a complete organizational reset. The fallout reached every level of the franchise, from the front office to the roster itself, as Vancouver moved into a long-term rebuild.

This transition has now placed one player firmly at the center of the conversation, with the organization publicly challenging its highest-paid star to take ownership of his future before next season begins.

Henrik Sedin Sends Clear Message to Canucks Star Elias Pettersson

Elias Pettersson has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons this year. His decline over the past two seasons has become one of the biggest concerns surrounding Vancouver’s rebuild. Since signing an eight-year, $92.8 million extension in 2024, Pettersson has struggled to maintain the elite offensive level that once made him one of the NHL’s premier centers.

His production dipped sharply, and questions about his preparation, confidence, and long-term fit inside the organization only intensified after the Canucks finished last overall with a 25-49-8 record.

With franchise legends Henrik and Daniel Sedin now running hockey operations, the organization appears focused on accountability rather than excuses. Speaking on an episode of the “32 Thoughts” podcast, Henrik Sedin addressed the outside criticism surrounding Pettersson while also making it clear that the responsibility now falls on the player himself.

Henrik said, “It’s a Canadian market. There’s going to be a lot of talk about your best players and the guy who gets paid the most. That’s just the way it is.” He added that the organization will continue supporting Pettersson but stressed that improvement ultimately depends on the player’s commitment and preparation.

“I think for him, we’re going to be there to support him. In the end, he needs to decide. We can’t push him to do anything. He needs to decide what player he wants to be,” Henrik added.

The comments carried a noticeably firmer tone than previous public statements from Vancouver management. He also noted that standards inside the organization would remain identical “if you’re the highest-paid player or if you’re a fourth-liner.”

Those remarks arrive after a difficult stretch for Pettersson, both statistically and publicly. The former 102-point center managed only 51 points in 74 games during the 2025-26 season, continuing a steep decline that fueled nonstop trade speculation across the league.

Reports surrounding friction with former teammates, criticism regarding offseason preparation, and concerns about lingering effects from previous injuries added even more pressure to an already difficult season.

Despite constant rumors connecting Pettersson to teams such as Detroit and Buffalo, moving the star center remains highly complicated. His full no-movement clause gives him complete control over any trade discussions, while his $11.6 million cap hit makes a deal difficult for most contenders to absorb without significant salary retention.

Henrik, however, made it clear that Vancouver still believes the talent remains intact.

Responding to Elliotte Friedman’s question about whether Pettersson can return to elite form, he said, “If he decides, and the preparation is there, he can come back.”

He added that Vancouver is not asking Pettersson to be “unbelievable,” but instead expects him to arrive prepared, become a strong teammate, and help raise the standard around the locker room.
