JJ Peterka was traded to the Utah Mammoth even before free agency commenced. The 23-year-old signed a five-year, $38.5 million contract with an average annual value of $7.7 million. Buffalo Sabres fans weren’t too pleased with the management’s decision to trade away Peterka, but he had been caught in trade rumors for a while before the deal finally happened.
Months after the trade, the 23-year-old recently joined David Pagnotta and Dennis Bernstein on the European Player Media Tour to elaborate on the exit from the Sabres.
What Are JJ Peterka’s Feelings Following the Utah Mammoth Trade?
First and foremost, Peterka joins the Mammoth’s young core; he is no longer a young player on a rebuilding roster; instead, the Mammoths see Peterka as one of the core players. “One of the reasons Utah was so aggressive in targeting Peterka is because of how well he fits their identity. This team is building a core that can create offensively and compete for a spot in the playoffs. They already have a great young core in place with Keller, Cooley, and Guenther.”, wrote Spencer Lazary for the Hockey News.
The Mammoth is a young, fearless team that wishes to leave its mark on the league next season. Speaking on the trade, Mammoth GM Bill Armstrong clearly stated the team’s expectations for the 23-year-old: “He will help solidify our scoring and add to what is already a great young core of forwards on the roster. Signing JJ to a long-term extension is another positive step towards building a sustainable contender here in Utah, and today is an exciting day for our entire organization.” NHL.com reported.
Perhaps the increased responsibility and leadership role make the prospect of playing for the Mammoth exciting for Peterka. Speaking to Pagnotta and Bernstein, the 23-year-old clearly knew what the move meant to him. “Obviously, a little weird at the start. Never gotten through something like that. But, when it all settled, got super excited to get going with a group that’s young and hungry to make a difference. I think I am super pumped since that happened.”

Peterka further stated that he has been putting his offseason to good use. The 23-year-old expressed his genuine desire to join the young team and, hopefully, make a difference. “I have been working really hard and can’t wait to get there with all the guys and get going.”
The Mammoths are prepared to enter the 2025-26 season with a mostly young core but with experience in the form of Nate Schmidt and Brandon Tanev, who were added to the roster this offseason.
