‘Sick Of His Arrogance and Trump-Like Condescension’ — Insider Lashes Out at Golden Knights HC John Tortorella

John Tortorella sparks controversy after a heated response to a goalie question as the Golden Knights face elimination in Game 6.

The Vegas Golden Knights are suddenly facing elimination after a 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 5 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Final. The defeat put Vegas behind 3-2 in the best-of-seven series, leaving no room for error heading into Game 6 on home ice.

Amid the growing pressure, Golden Knights head coach John Tortorella has become the center of a bit of controversy following a tense exchange with the media.

Golden Knights HC John Tortorella Draws Criticism After Heated Response

The loss marked the first time Vegas has dropped back-to-back games since Games 2 and 3 of its first-round series against the Utah Mammoth. A major factor in the team’s struggles has been its goaltending.

Starter Carter Hart has endured a difficult Final, becoming the first goaltender in Stanley Cup Final history to allow four or more goals in each of the first five games of a series. Through five games, he owns an .856 save percentage and has struggled to slow down Carolina’s attack.

After Game 5, one reporter asked Tortorella whether he considered turning to backup goaltender Adin Hill during the third period with Vegas trailing 4-1.

Tortorella quickly dismissed the question. “Oh, for Christ’s sake, that could be the stupidest question I’ve heard.”

The response sparked immediate backlash. NHL insider Jimmy Murphy didn’t hold back when reacting to Tortorella’s comments. “Sick of his arrogance and Trump-like condescension to the media he begs for money to every time he gets fired!” Murphy said.

While Murphy’s criticism was blunt, the debate highlights the pressure surrounding Vegas’ goaltending situation. From a reporter’s standpoint, asking about Hill was reasonable. Hart has allowed at least four goals in every game of the series, and many coaches have turned to a backup in similar situations to try to spark a change.

From Tortorella’s perspective, however, the idea may have made little sense. Hill hasn’t appeared in a game since early April, meaning he would have been thrown into the middle of a Stanley Cup Final game against one of the league’s hottest offenses after more than two months without game action.

Despite the criticism, Tortorella made it clear he isn’t planning for the season to end just yet. “We’ll be back here. We’re just going to do it in a different order… I’m going to leave my clothes here, that’s for sure. They’ll be in the hotel,” Tortorella said.

Game 6 now shifts to a sold-out T-Mobile Arena, where the Golden Knights will try to extend their season. To do that, they’ll need a stronger performance in net, fewer mistakes, and a way to slow down a Carolina team that has seized control of the series.
