‘It Was Awful’ — Flyers’ $17.25M Star Trevor Zegras Reveals Scars Of Battles With NHL Trade Rumors

After injuries and trade rumors in Anaheim, Trevor Zegras joins the Flyers with hopes of returning to the form that once made him a top NHL star.

Trevor Zegras, once one of the NHL’s most exciting young forwards, is starting a new chapter with the Philadelphia Flyers. The 24-year-old, who signed a three-year, $17.25 million deal through 2025-26, was traded over the summer in exchange for Ryan Poehling and draft picks. The move offers Zegras a fresh beginning after a rocky spell in Anaheim.

Can Trevor Zegras Recapture His Magic with the Flyers?

Zegras made an immediate impact in his first three NHL seasons, scoring 139 points in 180 games and dazzling fans with creative goals and jaw-dropping plays, including his famous “Michigan” alley-oop in 2021.

But the next two seasons proved challenging. Injuries piled up, his offensive output dropped, and persistent trade rumors left him feeling “awful” and anxious, he recently admitted.

“It was everywhere. It was every day. It was this and that, and this and that, and then it was another little thing that becomes a big thing. You’re not thinking about it, but you’re seeing it everywhere, and it just sucks,” he said [via ESPN.com].

Negotiations over a restricted free-agent deal in 2023 added pressure. New management and a coaching change pushed him from center to the wing, against his preference.

On top of that, ankle surgery and other lower-body injuries restricted him to 31 games in 2023-24 and 57 in 2024-25. His points-per-game fell from 0.77 to 0.53, signaling a sharp decline in production.

“It almost felt like you were alone when they didn’t believe in you,” Zegras said, describing the mental toll. Flyers coach Rick Tocchet and GM Daniel Briere see the trade as an opportunity for him to regain confidence and rediscover the creativity that made him a fan favorite.

Teammate Mason McTavish reflected on the move, “That sucked. Brutal. I pretty much spent every day with him. He’s happy there, which is good. It’s a good fit, but tough seeing your best friend go away.”

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead for Zegras in Philly

Zegras’ arrival in Philadelphia also pairs him with young talents like Matvei Michkov, offering new chemistry and opportunities on the ice.

The Flyers are hopeful this fresh start will help Zegras thrive again.

“There are certain parts of his game that he knows that he has to clean up. He’s willing to learn. He’s coachable. He’s been in the office watching video. He’s on the ice listening to the other coaches. He’s a great kid,” Tocchet said.

Zegras, for his part, is focused on enjoying the game and returning to the style of play that first made him a standout.
