Toronto Maple Leafs Reportedly Planning Sensational $39,375,000 Trade For Auston Matthews’ Team USA Teammate

The Toronto Maple Leafs are always in the spotlight, but this time the pressure is more intense as injuries and lineup depth concerns have revealed major holes at center ice. Organizational changes and increased salary cap room have driven the franchise toward more assertive trade conversations ahead of the offseason.

At the heart of these discussions is a veteran center who is more than familiar with playing alongside Auston Matthews through Team USA duty. As the offseason approaches, Toronto’s focus now lands on one of the league’s most closely watched contracts.

Maple Leafs Reportedly Enquiring About Vincent Trocheck Trade

The player at the center of Toronto’s attention is New York Rangers forward Vincent Trocheck, whose full contract value sits at $39,375,000 over seven years with a $5,625,000 cap hit. The reported interest connects directly to Toronto’s need for a second-line center after Max Domi’s injury complications and a lack of proven depth behind Matthews.

According to New York Post reporter Mollie Walker’s update, Toronto has already reached out to NYR GM Chris Drury over what it might take to get a deal done. The report also emphasized the injury situation involving Domi as a key trigger for the move, as Toronto evaluates short-term stability at center.

This development has pushed Trocheck back into focus as a high-value, contract-friendly option despite the complexity of his contractual clauses.

Trocheck’s appeal is not limited to production or salary structure. He shares a Team USA connection with Matthews, a detail that has added another context of familiarity to Toronto’s internal discussions.

This international link has only increased external speculation about the Leafs viewing him as a seamless fit for their top-six structure heading into next season.

From a roster-building standpoint, Toronto enters this negotiation with more flexibility than in previous years. The Maple Leafs are projected to hold around $22.2 million in cap space, which allows them to absorb Trocheck’s $5.625 million hit while still addressing multiple roster holes.

However, league sources indicate that Rangers GM Chris Drury is targeting a major return, including a first-round pick, a young NHL-ready player, and a top prospect.

Complicating matters further is Trocheck’s modified no-trade structure, which limits his movement from the current 12 teams to 10 teams starting July 1. This clause gives him a no-trade list to certain teams, meaning any deal would require alignment between player approval and organizational willingness from New York.

Inside the Rangers organization, the focus remains on maximizing value rather than moving quickly. The contract still carries three seasons of term, giving New York leverage in any negotiations. While Toronto continues to explore the fit, the gap between asking price and realistic return remains the central obstacle.

For now, the Trocheck conversation reflects a broader reality for the Maple Leafs: Toronto is actively searching for proven center help, but every available option comes with financial, contractual, and asset-based hurdles that make any deal far from simple.
