‘Who Knows What’s Gonna Happen’ — Maple Leafs’ Fan Favorite D-Man Puts Cards on the Table For 2026 Free Agency

After a promising first season in Toronto, Maple Leafs defenseman Troy Stecher is hoping to return to the franchise under new management. In his 58 games with the Leafs, Stecher registered 19:45 minutes per game, his most ice time since the opening seasons of his career with the Vancouver Canucks.

With his previous two-year deal (originally signed with the Edmonton Oilers) concluding, the offensive defenseman is evaluating his next move.

Stecher Candid in Desire To Stay With Maple Leafs Moving Forward

Throughout his career, the 32-year-old blue liner has been somewhat of a journeyman, playing for seven different NHL franchises. However, despite his career to this point, Stecher sees himself moving forward in a Toronto uniform.

Stecher joined “Leafs Morning Take,” with hosts Nick Alberga and former Maple Leafs defenseman Jay Rosehill.

Alberga opened the discussion, asking the 5’10”  free agent what his experience was like in Toronto.

“It was great, I had really fond memories of playing there,” said Stecher. “It’s a world-class organization.”

Following the high praise for the Maple Leafs organization, Stecher spoke to the unknown future, making it a point to express his desire to stay put.

“Who knows what’s going to happen in the offseason with all the change we have,” said Stecher. “I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, I hope I’m back. I really enjoyed being a Leaf, and I’ll just leave it at that.”

Leafs Nation appears to be on the same page as Stecher regarding his desire to wear a Toronto sweater, as several fans took to X to voice their opinions on the British Columbia native.

“My goat,” wrote a Stecher fan.

“Would love Stetch back! Guy actually gives a sh** and shows it every shift,” said an X user.

While Stecher and the fans yearn for a return to Toronto, nothing is set in stone.

On if negotiations have already begun, Stecher said, “I’m not gonna say no, there obviously has been, but to what degree I don’t know, that’s all on my agent. I will say the biggest thing is the change. I think there’s so many different categories and topics that I’m sure the organization wants to talk about and focus on and dive into.”

Stecher continued, “I’m sure the draft is a huge focus of it. July 1st is coming around. So there has been convo, I don’t know if it’s just a check-in or how serious it is, but at the end of the day, I’m hopeful to be a Leaf.”

DON’T MISS: ‘There Have Been Dark Times’: Golden Knights’ Mitch Marner Puts Maple Leafs’ Luckless Streak Behind Him

The vast amount of change in Toronto this offseason includes: the hiring of general manager John Chayka, the head coach vacancy after parting ways with Craig Berube, and arguably most notable, winning the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery.

The 2025-26 season was undoubtedly disappointing for the organization and its fans as the club missed the postseason for the first time in a decade. Now, with a fire sale thus far in the offseason, will Stecher remain or be yet another casualty of the determined Maple Leafs organization?
