Mitch Marner has been under constant heat for some time now. If the early exit from the playoffs this past season wasn’t enough, the eventual sign-and-trade deal with the Vegas Golden Knights has been a point of contention for fans.
While his 100 points last season were a big milestone, he was still scrutinized by the Toronto fans after the early playoff exit. Marner addressed this criticism in an interview on August 29, but his comments drew a scathing response from a former Maple Leafs enforcer.
What Did a Former Maple Leafs Forward Say About Mitch Marner?
In his interview with TSN yesterday, Marner revealed the depth of his struggles with fan criticism. He mentioned that in the last three years, the outside noise had been getting a bit too much for him, and he eventually had to get a mental coach.
So when the time for their playoff series against the Florida Panthers came, the pressure from the fans reached a crescendo. To make things worse, the Maple Leafs suffered a blowout loss to the Panthers in Game 7.
He even got a call from his wife’s father warning that someone had posted his address online, with people wanting to visit him. Marner mentioned he had no choice but to get all-around security for his home. But former Maple Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill had a scathing comment for Marner.
In a recent tweet, he mentioned, “Why does he always seem so full of sh*t?” The former Leafs forward, for one, wasn’t humored by Marner’s public interview. Rosehill has been critical of Marner since their conference semi-finals loss against the Panthers.

Rosehill has been a constant critic of Marner’s one-dimensional play style, arguing he lacks the grit needed for the playoffs. However, Marner’s recent public comments about the fans rubbed Rosehill the wrong way, as they painted the city in a bad light.
“It was a little tough, obviously. I mean, we kind of dealt with it for the last two years in a way,” Marner said in the interview. He continued, “The market’s very passionate. They love the team. I mean, I know it. I was born and raised there. I’ve been a part of the Leafs Nation for a long time.”
When Marner raised concerns about his family’s safety and his son’s well-being, Rosehill was not pleased with the image Marner painted and may have blown things out of proportion. Many critics have argued that Marner simply couldn’t handle the pressure of a traditional hockey market like Toronto. A non-traditional market like Vegas is thus expected to help him cope better with the pressure.
