2-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Explains Why Connor McDavid is Being Flanked By Tom Wilson on Team Canada’s Lines

Olympic gold medalist explains why Tom Wilson skates with Connor McDavid on Team Canada’s top line at Milano Cortina 2026.

The Olympic men’s hockey tournament returns with NHL stars back on the ice and fresh lineup choices under the spotlight. Team Canada arrived in Milan with big expectations and several bold decisions. One forward combination has already grabbed attention during early practices.

That leads to a question about why Connor McDavid has Tom Wilson beside him.

How Did a Gold Medalist Break Down Team Canada’s Decision to Pair Tom Wilson and Connor McDavid?

Team Canada began preparations for the Milano Cortina 2026 tournament with several new line looks during practice. One of the most discussed combinations featured Connor McDavid skating alongside Tom Wilson and Macklin Celebrini.

The move surprised some observers because Wilson built his reputation through physical play rather than pure scoring skill. However, insiders believe the decision reflects a specific tactical plan rather than a temporary experiment.

During an episode of “The Sheet with Jeff Marek,” Marek raised questions about Canada’s roster and line deployment. He noted that “a lot of eyebrows raised,” especially because Wilson leads the Washington Capitals in scoring this season.

Marek added that Wilson has “turned himself into a high-level player,” even though fans still remember his suspensions and heavy hits. The conversation shifted toward how Canada plans to balance skill with protection for its top stars.

Two-time Olympic gold medalist Cassie Campbell offered a direct explanation for Wilson’s role beside McDavid. She referenced a physical moment from the Four Nations Face-Off game between Canada and the United States in Feb. 2025.

Campbell said, “I’ll tell you why Tom Wilson’s on that line. Do you remember the first Canada-U.S. game at the Four Nations when Charlie McAvoy was in the lineup? Remember, he missed the final, but he was in that initial game. And the huge hit that he laid on Connor McDavid coming down the right side, I personally think that’s why Tom Wilson is there.”

Campbell believed Canada wanted extra physical presence to counter players like Charlie McAvoy. That McAvoy hit changed the momentum early in the Four Nations game at the Bell Centre. Just seconds after McAvoy leveled McDavid, Jake Guentzel scored for the United States to tie the game, and later won 3-1.

The physical tone set by the Americans has now forced Canada to respond with more strength and protection around its stars. Campbell suggested that placing Wilson next to McDavid could prevent similar situations during Olympic play.

Wilson’s current form with Washington also supports Canada’s decision. He leads the Capitals with 23 goals and 26 assists through 50 games entering the Olympic break. He averages over 19 minutes per night, the most among Capitals forwards. His combination of offense and physical presence offers Canada flexibility on a line built around speed and talent.

Campbell also questioned another part of Canada’s projected lineup. She said the fourth line featuring Bo Horvat, Sam Reinhart, and Brandon Hagel lacked a clear identity. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we see Sam Bennett come in and bring that physical dimension,” she noted. Bennett already joined the roster as an injury replacement, which could lead to adjustments during the tournament.

Canada enters the 12-team Olympic event in Group A alongside Czechia, Switzerland, and France. The team opens against Czechia at Santagiulia Arena on Thursday morning. Sidney Crosby serves as captain, with Connor McDavid and Cale Makar wearing alternate letters.
