‘The Bobfather’ — Tributes Pour In For Retiring TSN Insider Bob McKenzie

It’s truly the end of an era at TSN, as longtime TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie is announcing his retirement.

McKenzie, 68, first appeared on TSN in the mid-1980s and has officially worked for the network since 2000. He has won numerous accolades, including the Gemini Award for Best Studio Analyst for his work on the “2008 IIHF World Junior Championship: Gold Final.” He also received the 2016 Canadian Screen Award for Best Sports Analyst.

Hockey fans regard him as a leading source of insider information, breaking hockey news, and analysis.

Tributes Began To Pour In From Well Wishers To Bob McKenzie

McKenzie’s effect on hockey fans over the years was evident, as throngs of well-wishers paid tribute to him on social media.

One fan wrote, “The Bobfather is a legend, thanks for many great years. 🫶🏽”

This user said, “Legend. Great memories of growing up literally relying on Bob and his rankings/commentary. Enjoy it, bud, you’re a star.”

This fan exclaimed, “Someone show me those old TSN videos from my childhood. Legendary broadcaster! Top tier.”

Another fan said, “Bob is a legend. He put in so many years reporting on days like today. Thanks for the news, Bob! Congrats on your retirement.”

McKenzie had an appropriate sign-off, as he “reported” a trade of himself from TSN to a life to be spent enjoying retirement.

“The trade is one for none,” McKenzie said. “Which is to say I’m exchanging my semi-retired TSN life of the last five years – doing the World Junior Championships, NHL Draft Rankings, a handful of Toronto Maple Leaf broadcasts, TradeCentre and Free Agent Frenzy – for a fully-retired life of doing absolutely nothing. Well, nothing work-related anyway.”

“Today’s Free Agent Frenzy is the last working day in a 48-year professional career that included stops at The Sault Star, The Globe and Mail, The Hockey News (twice), The Toronto Star, TSN, ESPN, and NBC, amongst others,” he added.

TSN Hockey host James Duthie wished McKenzie well in his future endeavors while praising his professionalism and hard work.

“Bob has been the pillar of TSN’s hockey coverage for decades,” he said. “The voice of reason, the definitive last word on any topic, the conscience of the panel. Sitting across from him for the last 20 years is truly one of the greatest privileges of my career. He gave TSN credibility, likeability, and integrity. And more importantly than any of that, he’s just a wonderful human and a great friend to all of us.”

“I will miss having him at the end of the desk for NHL games, and especially the World Juniors, but I know I’ll be seeing him on the golf course and elsewhere. Congrats to a true legend, and happy retirement.”

Best of luck in retirement, Bob!
