For weeks, the future of one Dallas Stars forward hung in the balance. Trade rumors swirled around the center after another playoff disappointment, with teams like Vancouver circling like sharks. Then came June 19 and a four-year extension that surprised everyone. Now he is ready to explain why he chose to stay put when he could have gone anywhere.
Why Did Dallas Center Choose the Stars Over Other Suitors?
While Matt Duchene remained the top offensive player for the Stars with 30 goals and 52 assists across 82 regular-season games, his performance in the playoffs raised serious questions. With just one goal and five assists across 18 games, critics started wondering if he could deliver when it mattered most.
Adding fuel to the speculation, the Vancouver Canucks showed clear interest in bringing the veteran center north of the border. Many expected him to leave for Canada once free agency kicked in. Instead, Dallas locked him up with a four-year, $18 million deal carrying an AAV of $4.5 million. The move confused plenty of fans and pundits who thought he’d chase a bigger payday elsewhere.
But now Duchene gives his reason for staying. “For me, I think the last two years have been a learning process in the playoffs,” Duchene said. At 34, he has been part of five franchises and has played more than 1,138 games.
However, when it comes to the postseason, Duchene admits he’s still figuring things out. “Now I feel I can use what I’ve learned in the playoffs and apply it going forward,” Duchene said. “And I feel really good about getting the chance to do it with this team.”
What Makes Dallas the Right Fit for Matt Duchene’s Championship Chase?
With new head coach Glenn Gulutzan in place and a team that knows how to go deep into the postseason, the Stars represent the perfect opportunity for Duchene to finally break through. “A lot of people would love to play for the Dallas Stars, and I’m a guy who gets to, so I didn’t want to mess around with that,” he explained.
The motivation is crystal clear for Duchene. “You have a chance to win here, and that’s the most important thing for me,” he said. “My two years with the Stars so far have been fantastic, and other than not winning the Stanley Cup, I don’t think it could have gone any better.”
Duchene’s commitment goes beyond just staying comfortable. He wants to keep pushing toward the ultimate goal of capturing a Stanley Cup, and Dallas is the best place to pursue that goal. “I definitely know I can find a way to score more,” Duchene said confidently.
Despite the playoff struggles, Duchene feels much better about his game compared to his first year in Dallas. “This year, I think I was much better. I know the numbers say it wasn’t better, but I have had some advanced stat people tell me it was a lot better,” he explained. At 34, he believes there’s still room for improvement. “There is still much to learn at 34, and there is no reason why he can’t get better.”
