The Pittsburgh Penguins had fallen 3-2 once to arch-rivals the Philadelphia Flyers this season, and were not willing to repeat history. Consequently, the Penguins called for reinforcements before the two Pennsylvania teams met at the Xfinity Mobile Arena on Monday.
This time, the Penguins had the last laugh, thoroughly dominating the Flyers. Then there was Sidney Crosby: the Penguins’ backbone, who defied his age once again in the showdown against the Flyers, bolstering his legacy.
Sidney Crosby Remains a Towering Presence Against the Philadelphia Flyers
Every game of the season matters, but a showdown against the Flyers even more so. Before the Battle of Pennsylvania, the Penguins had fallen 7-2 to the Toronto Maple Leafs, disrupting the team’s two-game winning streak. The Pens just had to win the match against the Flyers, and they did so exceptionally. Pittsburgh’s 5-1 victory over the Flyers was orchestrated to a large extent by 38-year-old Crosby.
Crosby scored two goals against the Flyers, paving the way for the Penguins’ utter domination over their greatest rivals. Other veterans, such as Bryan Rust, Evgeni Malkin, and Erik Karlsson, also stepped up to the occasion, making crucial contributions to the team’s success.
“I think when you have a game like that, you just want to respond regardless of who you’re playing. But I think it helps. It was a pretty intense game the last time we played them here (a 3-2 shootout loss on Oct. 28). I think that whether it’s a combination of that or the fact that we didn’t have a good one at home, anything that it takes to motivate you will work. But we were definitely motivated tonight, and you can tell with our effort,” Crosby stated post-game, underlining the significance of a game against the Flyers.
Moreover, the Penguins captain’s record against the Flyers is unparalleled. The 38-year-old has more goals and assists against Philadelphia than anyone else in NHL history.
“Including everyone to ever play for the Flyers, only 38 skaters in NHL history have more goals at Xfinity Mobile Arena (formerly Wells Fargo Center) than Sidney Crosby’s 27. Crosby is the NHL’s all-time leader in goals (58), assists (78) and points (136)Â against the Flyers,” Penguins’ PR account posted on social media following the team’s win against Philadelphia.

The Penguins will be riding the wave of this phenomenal success as they travel to the Sunshine State to face the dominant Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning have a seven-game winning streak as they prepare to meet the New York Islanders on Dec. 2 at the UBS Arena.
