‘It’s Not Like That’ — Sidney Crosby Puts Cards on the Table Over Immediate Future With Penguins

Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins are heading into another high-pressure offseason after falling short of a deep Stanley Cup Playoff run.

Concerns about the roster, the franchise’s direction, and the future of its veteran core have pushed general manager Kyle Dubas squarely into the spotlight. Right in the middle of that conversation is Crosby himself, whose future has once again become one of the NHL’s biggest storylines.

Trade rumors continue swirling around Pittsburgh, but “Sid the Kid” may have just delivered his clearest message yet as the Penguins prepare for a franchise-shaping summer.

Sidney Crosby Clarifies Penguins Future While Kyle Dubas Shapes Roster Plans

Crosby addressed his future directly during an interview with Penguins insider Josh Yohe of The Athletic, where he explained why he continues approaching contracts on a short-term basis.

The Penguins captain, who remains signed through the 2026-27 season on a deal carrying an $8.7 million cap hit, said his decisions are centered around what benefits the organization rather than setting a personal retirement timeline.

“It’s pretty obvious why I would just go year to year with the contracts,” Crosby said on Wednesday. “At the end of the day, I’m just going to do what’s best for the team. It’s got nothing to do with how long I want to play. It’s not like that at all.”

Crosby reinforced the fact that retirement is not currently on his mind despite turning 39 in August 2025. “I definitely want to keep playing for as many years as possible,” he added.

These comments arrive during a period of uncertainty for Pittsburgh after a season where they punched above their weight. The Penguins still received point-per-game production from Crosby, but defensive issues and inconsistent depth scoring pushed the team out of the playoffs.

Dubas also avoided major deadline additions earlier in the season, signaling a longer-term transition rather than an aggressive push for immediate help.

Even with the uncertainty, both Crosby and the organization continue publicly emphasizing loyalty to one another. Dubas has repeatedly shut down trade speculation involving the franchise captain, while Crosby still holds a full no-movement clause and has consistently maintained that Pittsburgh is where his heart is.

The speculation has not disappeared, however. Teams like the Montreal Canadiens and Colorado Avalanche continue surfacing in hypothetical discussions because of Crosby’s Nova Scotia roots and close friendship with Avalanche star Nathan MacKinnon.

Still, league insiders continue viewing those scenarios as unlikely unless Pittsburgh’s direction dramatically changes in the coming years.

What makes this offseason especially important is Pittsburgh’s financial flexibility. The Penguins enter the summer with a league-high projected $42.54 million in cap space with several large contracts set to come off the books under the NHL’s rising $104 million salary cap.

That flexibility allows Dubas to reshape the roster around Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang for what could become the final competitive stretch of their era together. Reports have already linked Pittsburgh to players capable of adding size and secondary offense, including unrestricted free agent Mason Marchment.

For now, the Penguins captain appears committed to staying in Pittsburgh, but he has also made it clear that the organization’s direction still matters heavily moving forward.
