Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final ended with a solid 5-2 win for the Florida Panthers, the defending Stanley Cup champions. But despite the comfortable victory, it was the third period that really got people talking.
Brad Marchand, known for stirring things up, was again in the middle of the action, clashing with several Carolina Hurricanes players and increasing the intensity. But the moment that really grabbed attention was a heated exchange involving Shayne Gostisbehere.

Florida came out strong and took a convincing 5-2 win over Carolina in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final. But while the scoreboard showed a clear victory, the third-period drama between Marchand and Gostisbehere was what really got fans buzzing.
It started when Marchand tried to deliver a big hit on Gostisbehere along the boards. The Hurricanes defenseman didn’t forget. Just moments later, with the puck in the neutral zone, Gostisbehere appeared to fire it straight into Marchand’s midsection on purpose, catching him in the elbow.
That was all it took to set Marchand off. He immediately dropped his gloves and went after Gostisbehere. The two wrestled to the ice before officials broke it up. Marchand got two roughing minors and a 10-minute misconduct for dropping the gloves without his opponent doing the same. Gostisbehere got a two-minute minor for roughing.
Although he wasn’t penalized for shooting the puck at Marchand, the NHL’s Department of Player Safety may still review the incident and decide whether further action is needed.
Reactions poured in online, with emotions running just as high off the ice as they did on it. One fan didn’t hold back, calling it a “100% dirtbag play bros not shooting it from center ice.”

Another questioned the level of physicality, asking, “In hockey how dirty is this?”
Some blamed both sides, with one comment summing it up: “My understanding is that Marchand took a hit at Gostisbehere with no puck in sight. So that’s why he shot the puck at him. They are both at fault. The refs are calling too many stupid penalties! JUST LET THEM PLAY PLAYOFF HOCKEY!!!!”

A few fans focused on potential discipline, with one saying, “Yes. 3-game suspension, minimum.”
Marchand, as usual, split opinion. One post read, “Not a fan of Marchand, but that guy is an absolute pig. Good on Marchand.”

Another fan even speculated about a separate hit, asking, “Did Ekblad elbow Blake in the back of the head?” Clearly, the game struck a nerve — and with Game 2 just around the corner, fans are bracing for even more fireworks.
After the game, Gostisbehere admitted things boiled over: “I was heated. Pretty p***ed off. He tried to take a run at me, I shot the puck at him. It is what it is. Had a little tussle.”

Panthers head coach Paul Maurice was asked about the scuffle but kept it close to the vest: “I’ll be keeping that to myself.”

Meanwhile, Florida controlled the game from start to finish thanks to a strong showing by goalie Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 31 saves. The Panthers are now 6-2 on the road in the playoffs. For Carolina, this marked their 13th straight loss in a conference final — something they’ll be desperate to change in Game 2.
The next game is set for Thursday night in Raleigh, and with tempers already flaring, fans can expect even more fireworks.
