The Colorado Avalanche continue to lead the NHL standings, sitting comfortably in first place with a 27-2-7 record. They’re riding a six-game winning streak and are coming off a tight 1-0 victory over Utah on Tuesday.
With their sights set on another deep playoff run, the Avalanche are reportedly exploring ways to strengthen their roster further. As the trade market begins to take shape, insiders have linked Colorado to an $18 million center who could add valuable depth down the middle.
$18 Million NHL Center Pops Up in Colorado Avalanche Rumors
Nashville Predators center Ryan O’Reilly has surfaced in recent trade speculation involving Colorado. The veteran is currently in the third season of his four-year, $18 million deal and remains one of Nashville’s most reliable contributors. O’Reilly has been a steady force offensively, posting 30 points in 36 games.
On The Athletic, insider Chris Johnston outlined why a reunion between O’Reilly and the Avalanche could make sense under the right circumstances. “O’Reilly doesn’t have a no-trade, but the Predators intend to treat him as if he does,” Johnston said. “Do you know what may compel a guy to jump off the ship and give the team the go-ahead to look at moving him?”
Johnston pointed to familiarity and opportunity as key factors. He noted that a return to Colorado would represent a homecoming of sorts for O’Reilly. He was drafted by the Avalanche in 2009 and began his NHL career with the team. “They’ve now got room to add up the middle during a season where they’re all-in chasing a Stanley Cup. It has the makings of a comfortable situation for all involved,” he said.
However, a return to Colorado would come with a different role. O’Reilly would likely slot behind Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson in the depth chart, meaning fewer minutes and less offensive responsibility. Still, Johnston suggested the opportunity might be appealing.
While Colorado has drawn attention, the Avalanche aren’t the only team being linked to O’Reilly. NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has also connected the veteran center to the Minnesota Wild.
“The Wild need a center who can win draws, and O’Reilly can still contribute offensively, is a Cup champion and is the type of character guy Wild general manager and president of hockey operations Bill Guerin loves, as far as the culture piece of it.” LeBrun said.

O’Reilly hasn’t shown much interest in entertaining trade discussions at this stage, and Nashville appears content to keep him unless a strong offer surfaces.
