‘I Didn’t Think It Was True’ – Robert Thomas Gets Brutally Honest on Buffalo Sabres Fans Campaigning For a Trade

Robert Thomas has found himself in the spotlight for an unexpected reason. The St. Louis Blues center was widely mentioned in trade rumors leading up to the deadline, but in the end, no deal materialized.

Now, Thomas is opening up about the moment Buffalo Sabres fans audibly campaigned to get him to hop on the bandwagon of the most in-form team in the National Hockey League.

Sabres Fans Still Pushing for Robert Thomas Trade

Thomas, the Blues’ top-line center, became one of the most talked-about names during trade speculation this season. Much of the chatter stemmed from the belief that the Blues were entering a major rebuild, which naturally put their most valuable players under the spotlight.

At 26, Thomas is widely viewed as one of the organization’s biggest assets. He is a near-point-per-game center and is signed to a long-term contract carrying an $8.125 million cap hit through 2031. That combination of production, age, and contract value made him an attractive target for teams looking to add a top-line forward.

Among those teams, the Buffalo Sabres were frequently mentioned as a possible landing spot.

The speculation reached another level when Sabres fans began chanting Thomas’s name at KeyBank Center during a game in early March. The chants came as rumors circulated about possible discussions between Buffalo and St. Louis.

When asked about the unusual moment, Thomas admitted he was surprised to hear about it. “Yeah, that was pretty interesting. I had heard about it, but I didn’t think it was true,” Thomas said. “Then one of my close buddies here, his brother was at the game and said it happened. So, yeah, it’s pretty cool.”

Thomas added that he appreciates the passion of Buffalo’s fan base and the atmosphere surrounding the team this season. “Obviously, you know, that organization has really flourished this year and the city’s alive,” he said.

“I remember just after the Anaheim game, we took a peek at the Buffalo-Tampa game and it just looked like probably the craziest game of the year. So, yeah, it’s pretty cool.”

Despite the rumors and fan excitement, Thomas made it clear that nothing serious ever developed behind the scenes. He reiterated that the Blues didn’t approach him about waiving his no-trade clause.

“I was never asked anything from the Blues,” Thomas explained. “Everything that I heard was coming from the insiders and different things online. I just want to be clear: I was never asked, and nor did I ever ask for a trade.”

For now, Thomas remains a key part of the Blues’ plans moving forward. As the season continues, he and St. Louis will shift their focus back to the ice, with the team set to face the New York Islanders on Tuesday.
