‘It’s F**king Rigged’ — NHL World in Meltdown as Maple Leafs Get #1 2026 Draft Pick

The NHL world is in total meltdown as the Toronto Maple Leafs defied low lottery odds to secure the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NHL Draft.

After a catastrophic season in which the league’s second-worst defensive record snapped their near-decade-long playoff streak, ownership enforced a leadership reset. Most expected a slow, decade-long rebuild, but the lottery balls tilted in Toronto’s favor, handing them a shot at drafting generational talent Gavin McKenna.

The outcome has triggered strong reactions across the league, as the Maple Leafs shift from playoff failure to a rare chance to reshape their future in no time.

Toronto Maple Leafs’ Lottery Win Forces Big Decision on No. 1 Pick

The Leafs won the 2026 NHL Draft Lottery on Tuesday, despite holding a minuscule 8.5% chance of landing on top of the order. The result pushed them up four spots and handed them the No. 1 overall selection for the third time in franchise history. It also allowed them to keep their protected first-round pick, which now moves to Boston in either 2027 or 2028.

This outcome came weeks after their elimination from playoff contention on April 2, following a 4-1 loss to San Jose. Injuries to Auston Matthews, William Nylander, and Chris Tanev played a major role in the slide, while defensive struggles left them near the bottom of the conference.

Over the past 10 years, the Maple Leafs have won more draft lotteries than playoff series, underlining a lack of on-ice success in the organization.

New general manager John Chayka now faces a defining choice. Speaking to TSN insider Mark Masters, he said, “I’ve kept track of him [McKenna] for a number of years now, and the skill level, the creativity, obviously the puck ability, and then his shot and release is all pretty special.”

Chayka’s comments point toward a strong interest in Penn State’s top prospect Gavin McKenna, though trade options remain in play.

The timing of the draft has also become a talking point, drawing added attention to the situation. Reporter Anna Dua noted that both the 2016 and 2026 drafts take place in Buffalo, with Toronto holding the first pick in each case. In 2016, that selection became Auston Matthews, linking the two moments in a way fans quickly noticed.

Reactions across the league came fast and were often blunt. On the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, Paul Bissonnette said, “F*ck the Leafs. It’s f**king rigged.”

Others echoed similar views but added context. Barstool Sports’ Mike Grinnell simply posted, “Rigged,” while NHL writer JFresh joked, “Chayka must be dying to do just a little bit of illegal pre-draft testing.”

Jesse Pollock offered a broader trend, writing, “The Toronto Maple Leafs have missed the playoffs twice in the past 10 years. They’ve won the lottery both times.”

The No. 1 pick gives Toronto a real chance to reshape its roster in a short time, but it also brings higher expectations. After a season filled with setbacks, the next move will play a key role in how this turnaround is judged.
