There’s a lot of buzz around the Montreal Canadiens this year, and for good reason. Martin St. Louis has this roster humming, and though there are some glaring holes for the brass to address this summer, a young core powered by Lane Hutson, Ivan Demidov, and Oliver Kapanen has Montreal firmly in contention to return to the playoffs.
That said, there are still a few things for the Canadiens to iron out, as noted by NHL insider Pierre McGuire.
Pierre McGuire Cautions Lane Hutson Over Risky On-Ice Reaction
The Canadiens have put together a strong 2025-26 season with a 41-21-10 record and 92 points, placing them third in the Atlantic Division.
The team has improved compared to last year, with better results in tight situations and more support across the lineup. Cole Caufield continues to lead the team in goals, while Nick Suzuki handles much of the offensive creation.
During a March 26 game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Lane Hutson became a key part of the conversation after reacting to a play involving goaltender Jakub Dobes. With 5:16 remaining in the third period and Montreal leading 2-1, Boone Jenner drove hard to the net and made contact with Dobes, sending the goalie to the ice. Hutson quickly stepped in and confronted Jenner, despite the size difference between the two.
The moment led to mixed opinions, as some viewed it as a sign of standing up for a teammate, while others raised concerns about the risk involved. Jenner was given a minor penalty for goaltender interference, and Montreal held on to secure the 2-1 win. Hutson also recorded an assist in the game, reaching his 70th point of the season.
NHL insider Pierre McGuire shared his view on the situation while speaking on The Sick Podcast. He said, “If I’m a coach of a team, and I see that, I’m pissed. I’m pissed. Lane Hutson shouldn’t be doing that stuff. No way.
“No way, man. I’m telling you, that’s a recipe for disaster in this league. I get it. We’re all giddy. We’re happy that they won. I’m telling you, from being in this league for 37 years, that’s a recipe for disaster. If you’re going to be, not you, but if the team thinks that that was a good thing, no, no, no, no.”
Hutson, 22, has become an important part of Montreal’s defense with his ability to move the puck and contribute on offense. He has recorded 11 goals and 60 assists for 71 points in 72 games this season and ranks among the top players in assists.
