The NHL offseason is never short of speculation, but things have hit a boiling point in Vancouver. With Quinn Hughes, the Canucks’ $47.1 million star defenseman, at the center of persistent trade rumors, fans and insiders alike are anxiously watching how the team handles its roster moving forward.
Adding fuel to the conversation, veteran defenseman Tyler Myers recently shared his thoughts on the Canucks’ current atmosphere and direction during his appearance on the “Cam & Strick Podcast” with hosts Cam Janssen and Andy Strickland. While Myers didn’t directly address the trade rumors surrounding Hughes, his comments shed light on how the team is preparing for what could be a highly scrutinized and pivotal season.
Teammate Speaks Out As Quinn Hughes Trade Rumors Reach Boiling Point
Myers was asked how it feels to approach a new season without the drama that has often clouded the Canucks in previous years. Myers is referring to the constant presence of rumors around Vancouver, not necessarily confirming or denying any specific trade involving Hughes.
“I mean, is it kind of nice just to go into the season, kind of have a fresh start, not have a lot of drama surrounding the team that’s been surrounding you guys the last couple of years?” Janssen asked.
Myers responded honestly, saying, “Yeah, it is nice to focus on that. But I think when you’re talking about Vancouver, you’re always gonna… you’re always going to hear about something, 100%. It’s just the way the market is. And, you know, when things aren’t going well, it’s tough. But when things are going well, it’s an amazing place to play.”

Myers’ words ring especially true now, with speculation swirling around Hughes’ future with the team. Despite being the face of the Canucks’ blue line and one of the league’s most dynamic young defensemen, Hughes’ name has surfaced in trade talks, leaving many to wonder what the front office has planned.
Trade rumors around Quinn Hughes just won’t go away, especially the talk linking him to the New Jersey Devils. But if the Canucks decide to move on from their star defenseman, it would seriously hurt their long-term hopes of being a true contender.
That said, there’s no question that once July 1st, 2026, arrives, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin will be doing everything he can to sign Hughes to a long-term extension. The goal is clear: keep their captain in Vancouver for most of his career.
