Quinn Hughes Reveals When He Knew the End Was Near For Canucks Tenure

Quinn Hughes opens up on sensing his Vancouver exit early and starting a new chapter with the Minnesota Wild.

Some exits in sports do not come with drama or noise, and the same happened with the former Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes. It built slowly through the locker room drama in the 2024-25 season, and then an underwhelming start to the 2025-26 season sealed the team’s fate.

For Hughes, that feeling of his departure followed him near the end in Vancouver.

Quinn Hughes Discussed the Feeling Before His Departure

Quinn Hughes did not describe his departure from Vancouver as a shock. Speaking after his first game with the Minnesota Wild, his new team, he shared how the thought lingered before the trade became official. During the Thursday night game against the Buffalo Sabres at Rogers Arena, he sensed it could be his last there.

“I think I had a good idea that, you know, it was potentially my last game there in Rogers on Thursday,” Hughes said postgame on Sunday. “And then, kind of had a good idea Friday morning.”

That awareness shaped how Hughes handled those final hours. He chose to travel to New York instead of waiting in place. Being around his brothers and close teammates mattered more than staying put.

“I wanted to go to New York, just obviously, you never know,” Hughes said. “And I was able to see my brothers and get dinner with some of my close friends on the team, and see those guys.

“And I mean, I had some great memories there and some really good friendships, so it was obviously tough, but I can honestly couldn’t be more excited for this chapter.”

Hughes’ time in Vancouver carried meaning beyond his role on the ice. He grew from a young draft pick (7th overall in 2018) into the face of the franchise. Teammates leaned on his calm play and steady habits. In 2023, he became captain, but as seasons passed, changes around the team became harder to ignore.

The Canucks also faced a decision shaped by timing. Hughes was moving closer to control over his future as he was in the second-to-last year of his six-year, $47,100,000 contract. Management chose to act before uncertainty turned into loss. The return brought young players, and a future pick meant to speed the next phase. Vancouver accepted the pain of the move to gain long-term clarity.

Minnesota viewed the moment differently, a chance that rarely opens in the form of a top defenseman. Speaking about which, Wild general manager Bill Guerin said,

“Bringing a player like Quinn Hughes here, you just don’t get these opportunities all that often… when a player of Quinn’s caliber comes available, and you have an opportunity to get him, there’s a cost to it, and we were willing to do what it takes.”

Hughes’ debut against the Boston Bruins, a 6-2 win on Sunday, demonstrated how easily he could integrate into their system. Heavy minutes (close to 27) and a goal sent an early message to his new room.

Minnesota’s group offered support and purpose (contending for the Stanley Cup), and that mattered to a player like Hughes, focused on winning and growth.
