NHL World Raises Questions As France Enforces Suspension Following Tom Wilson Fight at Winter Olympics

NHL reacts after France suspends Pierre Crinon for the rest of the Olympics following fight with Canada's Tom Wilson.

The hockey world is buzzing after France handed down a tournament-ending suspension to Pierre Crinon following his fight with Canada’s Tom Wilson at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

What started as a heated third-period moment in Sunday’s preliminary-round finale quickly turned into one of the most talked-about incidents of the tournament. And now, one of its most controversial disciplinary decisions.

Debate Intensifies Over Discipline Handed Down to Pierre Crinon After Tom Wilson Fight

The sequence began when Crinon delivered a high hit on Canadian star Nathan MacKinnon. Wilson immediately stepped in to respond. The two exchanged punches before Crinon wrestled Wilson to the ice. At one point, slamming him face-first during the takedown.

But it wasn’t just the fight that drew attention.

As Crinon left the ice, he taunted the Canadian crowd. Cupping his hands to his ears and waving his arms. The gesture further ignited an already hostile atmosphere inside the arena.

Later, the French Hockey Federation announced Crinon would be suspended for the remainder of the Olympics. In its official statement, the federation clarified that the suspension was not directly for the fight itself. Instead, it cited Crinon’s “provocative behavior upon leaving the ice.” Calling it a clear violation of the Olympic spirit.

That distinction has only fueled more debate. Reaction across the NHL community was swift.

Former NHL player and analyst Paul Bissonnette questioned the ruling on social media, writing, “What a weird thing this is? They kicked him out of the tournament for this?”

Hockey writer Derek O’Brien added a more tongue-in-cheek response, noting, “Well done! I was halfway through before I figured out it was a joke. Judging by the comments, some people never did.”

Analyst John McAllister described, “Pierre Crinon taking on the role of villain today. Slightly irrelevant at 10-2 to Canada ….”

Fans also had a mixture of stern and sarcastic thoughts on the incident. With one suggesting that the NHL team might go after Crinon. Betting outlet Bodog even posed the question directly to followers: “Is this too harsh of a punishment?”

While fighting has long been part of hockey’s culture, especially in the NHL, the Olympic spotlight carries a different standard.

France now turns its focus to an elimination matchup against Germany on Tuesday. The winner will advance to face Slovakia in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, Canada advances to the quarterfinals. It will meet the winner of Czechia versus Denmark.
