The Pittsburgh Penguins are looking to make the playoffs after a three-season drought while keeping an eye on long-term growth. Their mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent has kept them near the top of the Metro Division.
With trade season approaching, attention is shifting toward moves that could strengthen both the present and the future. That mindset now connects to a young defenseman drawing league-wide interest.
Penguins Linked to Braden Schneider as Possible Trade Addition
Pittsburgh’s strong play has been driven by consistent scoring, a reliable power play, and leadership from Sidney Crosby, who continues to set the tone offensively and on special teams.
Even with their solid position in the standings, the Penguins appear open to exploring roster upgrades, particularly on the blue line. Adding younger talent could strengthen their long-term outlook without sacrificing current competitiveness.
NHL insider Josh Yohe recently suggested the Penguins could target New York Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider in a bold trade. In his column for The Athletic, Yohe wrote, “Dubas absolutely loves identifying talented, young players who aren’t working out in their current city… Schneider, a right-handed defenseman, is only 24 and showcases plenty of physical talent.”
Yohe added that this would be “a move based on the future as much as the present,” pointing to Pittsburgh’s interest in younger players with upside.
Schneider, drafted 19th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, plays a physical, defense-first style built around coverage, shot blocking, and steady puck movement under pressure. This season, he has posted 2 goals and 8 assists for 10 points in 54 games while averaging over 20 minutes per night.
Insider Elliotte Friedman also fueled speculation during an appearance on NHL Network, hinting that Schneider could be part of the Rangers’ upcoming decisions. “I kind of wonder if it might end up being something like Braden Schneider, to be honest,” Friedman said, noting that Rangers general manager Chris Drury has signaled openness to trade calls.
Friedman added, “For a defenseman who’s a bit heavier, there’s always interest in that kind of a player, and I think there is some in him, and the Rangers may have a decision to make.”

For the Penguins, a potential move for Schneider would fit a broader strategy of adding younger talent, as the Crosby-Malkin-Letang era nears its end.
With Crosby still leading the team and the Penguins pushing for playoff success, a future-focused trade could help bridge the gap between their current core and the next generation.
If talks progress, Schneider’s age, contract status, and physical style could make him an appealing target for a team planning beyond this season.
