The Los Angeles Kings have been competitive this season, but haven’t achieved the breakthrough management expected. The franchise entered the campaign hoping to finally escape the first-round playoff exit pattern that has plagued them for years.
However, despite adding pieces during the offseason, questions remain about whether the current roster can take the next step. One area of potential concern involves the coaching staff.
NHL Insider Reports Pete DeBoer in Advanced Talks With Kings
While head coach Jim Hiller has done solid work, speculation has emerged about whether the Kings might pursue an upgrade. One veteran coach with an impressive resume has reportedly engaged in discussions with the organization about a potential return to the NHL.
Insider Cam Robinson revealed that Pete DeBoer and the Los Angeles Kings have been in advanced discussions about a coaching position. The veteran bench boss has been out of work since Dallas fired him following their Western Conference Final appearance last June.
“While not finalized, hearing that Peter DeBoer and the LAK have had advanced discussions,” Robinson reported. The news suggests Los Angeles is at least exploring alternatives to Hiller despite the team’s respectable performance.
DeBoer brings 662 career wins across stops with Florida, New Jersey, San Jose, Vegas, and Dallas. His extensive playoff experience includes three consecutive Western Conference Finals appearances with the Stars.
However, Robinson noted that landing DeBoer won’t come easily. The veteran coach appears content with his current situation away from the daily grind of NHL coaching. Any offer from Los Angeles would need to be significant to entice him back.
“I’m told DeBoer is quite happy at the moment, so a deal would seemingly need to be substantial for him to sign on,” Robinson explained. The qualifier suggests DeBoer holds leverage in negotiations.
He doesn’t need to return to coaching for financial reasons and can afford to be selective about his next opportunity. Los Angeles would likely need to present a long-term, high-dollar contract to convince him that the Kings represent the right situation.
The potential addition of DeBoer would create an awkward situation for Hiller. The current head coach led Los Angeles to a solid record last season and has the team performing adequately this year.
However, management might believe DeBoer’s experience and track record provide a better chance at postseason success. DeBoer recently confirmed publicly that he wants to coach again and hopes to win a Stanley Cup.
His comments came during a SiriusXM NHL Radio appearance where he discussed missing the competitive aspects of coaching. The Kings could provide that championship opportunity if they’re willing to meet his contract demands.
Whether Los Angeles ultimately pulls the trigger on replacing Hiller with DeBoer remains uncertain. For now, the advanced discussions indicate the Kings are seriously considering a coaching upgrade.
